Rail services through the Channel Tunnel have been suspended after smoke was seen coming from a freight shuttle train on Monday lunchtime. Eurotunnel said it took the decision to close the tunnel following the incident at about 1300 BST.

Eurostar, which runs services through the tunnel from London to Paris and Brussels, said an evacuation had been carried out "smoothly".

Both companies said trains should begin running again later on Monday.

A Eurostar spokeswoman said: "All services - including passenger and freight shuttle trains and through-train and freight services - are not running at present.

"We are standing by to start services again as soon as we can."
