A political infight broke out and most of the "active" group who had been progressing things at a great rate left, whoever is left is either not doing any active restoration or is happy for the place to remain undeveloped, this might provoke a reactio, but thats maybe the only way to find out any news

 

Thanks Matt for shedding some light on whats going on at shillingstone.Their new facebook page is papering over the cracks as any society would do if they had internal problems.I just find it sad that for those of us who have helped their coffers over the last few years are led to believe different.Some one asked for the idea that a few items that had gone missing be returned or at least be told the reason why.I have been told that the web site is down because the web master is no longer available to do the job..If every one who was working on the track, fencing, etc has left what is the plan for the future.Only asking as I'm sure a lot of other people are.They were making into a wonderful site and a credit to everyone involved.

 

Hi Matt just found out why they all left shillingstone.They now have a new facebook page which tells you nothing but posts things that are irrelevant as to what is going on down there now.Website still down and as far as I'm concererned so is my interest.Long live midsomer norton.

 

The last time i saw spelling like that was when i had one glass too many of rough cider in Dulverton Somerset.

 

Perhaps you could share the reasons with the rest of the forum? Otherwise I'm not sure what point you're trying to make by posting the above message!

Been a regular visitor to shillingstone and even worked there in the early days with the likes of keith bottomley, sid howlett, mike rutter, mike clark, and old dennis. But things have changed a lot there, seem's to be a lot of bickering about nothing. I t doesn't seem a friendly there as it used to be. Hope all the early day work isn't going to waste

 

I'm in a Facebook group for industrials and the 88DS is up for sale by the owner due to personal circumstances.

 

I am very disappointed to hear this news (if you can call it that) I thought this project had the makings of the restoration of part of the S&DR. I guess that this is going to be the problem with trying to reopen a line like the S&DR.

I just hope that all the S&DR heritage bodies can get together and thrash out a master plan for the whole line. This may mean setting up a new overall S&DR Trust to take on all of the projects, but at least everyone will be singing from the same hymn sheet. If this could be done you never know but you could possible end up with say John Bunch’s locos based somewhere a long the line.

The new site at first seems to be a bit better and easyier to use, will have to wait and see.Looks as though they are moving forward with more track to be laid and the waiting shelter nearing contruction.Lets hope the official web site is more informative than the repetiveness of their facbook page. What was on there was enough to drive you to drink. Good luck to them for the future.

 

Hello chaps thort i would shed some light on the this society over the last 6 month's pardon for the spelling i am one of the chaps responsible to help billed the new web site and the new facebook which there are to facebooks one is run by members for members/interested party's and one the advertising department as the official page. As with a lot of previous comments there was a big upheaval with politics’ which was dawn to it became a fuw peoples privet railway of sorts. on a sadder note a lot of vital items S and T and railwayarner that were donated to us have gone and some of this sold. are museum now is much demised now from these thefts / missing items whoever you call it . But enough of all the doom and gloom we Risen from the ashes with lots exiting news. We need to have near on 2000 ish sleepers Cumming at some point 7 points to be laid when possible, the barrow crossing is being read dun a lattice SR signal being installed at end of the platform new shop and caff opened, dawn shelter being made a new mahogany block shelf for the signle box and a new diesel shunter might come at some pount a new gray LMS guards van and, STEAM TO RITERN THIS SUMMER if possible that s right for are 150 anniversary. For throws of you woering we have on a hard drive lots of photos from early days being uploaded shortly to are new website hop this helps. all this would not bin possibly without the help of the old gard of helpful volantears who helped build swange railway in the early day now gladly leading us in the right direction. Shillingstone is very much alive. Like all societies it has many people who have views on "what should be done" and "how to do it",they come and .....they go. Fortunately Shillingstone has a growing task-force who, despite the horrible weather, have started the down shelter; started the restoration of our (once condemned) carriage; re-equiped the signal box, converted the 'Station Master's Office' into a kitchen, the shop a cafe and the cafe a shop (5 days between Christmas and New Year);now the line is heading towards Bath(okay it did mean that the flat bottomed track had to be removed- looked like a backward development) bull-headed track is being used and a barrow-crossing is coming(okay only 30ft so far)...I could go on....but I'm biased - I volunteer there. Visit and see for yourselves - bring the kids on Easter Saturday and take part in the 'Annual Shillie bear Easter Egg Hunt'.
