It was noted yesterday in the LSL Chairman's train that 2 Generator Cars were in. 6311 which is the converted BG and has been the regular gen car for LSL.

But also freshly converted and outshopped BSK, 35467, was in the train. Can we hold out hope LSL will use one of these vice diesel on their steam hauled trains at some point now they have two?

We can hope that this will happen but it is the call of LSL. Ask yourself why Belmond has a generator car (that they overhauled for the current season) rather than just be happy for the Class 67 to remain on the rear? I realise that it as much the view of DBC as Belmond but it is a signal of a TOC differentiating between when a diesel is necessary for operational reasons and when an alternative is more suitable.

There is a wider point that is not relevant for this thread so I will not expand on that here.

Intersting that the Modded BSK Generstor car has gone with the consist as well as a diesel.

If Gresley is hauling the ECS Crewe to Holyhead and turning, does that mean the BSK is providing the power and no diesel at all? Perhaps LSL are turning to unassisted steam…..

There is a move from Southall to Paddington after 34046 brings the final day of the Welsh Dragon back, so it would appear so.

Possibly might suggest a change of plan then. I had heard earlier that LSL were looking in to using the Gen Car on steam trips more often, but obviously not this one.

Agreed. But I am informed from a fairly reliable LSL source that they intend to run “as many tours as possible and practical diesel-less”.

There are now two active Generator Cars in the fleet. BG 6311 and the new converted BSK 35467 for the Chairman’s Train.

Both were active in the recent private charter from London to Glasgow.

Fair play, guess they will have to start reducing train lengths on steam jobs then.

ETS from an electric loco cuts out going through neutral sections, and can give a power surge when it comes back on. The motor alternators on Mk2s really don't like having their power supply interrupted - BR had lots of problems with the Deltics on air con Mk2s. Better to use an external generator where possible, either from a diesel on the back or a separate generator car. I understand 6311 was there as a back up in case of any problems with the new generator fitted to 35467.

LSL will, under the recent SRPS rolling stock agreement, have access to a full dual brake, dual heat MK1 set that they can use as they see fit.

No need for a genny car or ETS diesel if you were to use steam heat, which the SRPS set offers the possibility of.

Yes but they currently don't have a safety case for vac operation.

If there was no rear diesel on the arrival at Holyhead, the steam loco would
    What about CDL?

The SRPS set is dual braked.

Depends on the model of CDL used, but under LSL I would assume either diesel in consist or Genny Car.
