More about the movement of locos etc.

The big news from the Sandstone Heritage Trust in South Africa is we are preparing to move all our big 3'6" locos from Germiston to Sandstone Estates in the Eastern Free State.

    The items include the following:

    Class 25NC 3488 NBL 27348/1954
    Class 15F 3052 "Avril" - was David Shepherd's loco NBL 25591/1944
Class GMAM 4079 - the first loco acquired by Sandstone in 1997 BP 7677/1956
Rhodesia Railways DE2 Diesel Electric RR No. 1207 English Electric 2238/1955
Cowans and Sheldon steam crane 355/1965 SAR No. 578

Because of the magnitude of the move from Bloemfontein, Gert Jubileus has prepared a detailed report for posterity which you can view https://cts.vresp.com/c/?SandstoneEstatesPtyL/bd719551bb/c4ec4d482a/7ca83a4bf0

In the last few days, John Titlow of Heritage Railway Magazine in the UK also commented on the move in some detail.

    Another update;

After the ground-breaking road movements of Sandstone 3’6” gauge locomotives from Bloemfontein in August (see Heritage Railway UK Issue 285. The story of the recent loco moves to Sandstone), preparations have begun to move the Sandstone 3’6” gauge locomotives and other assets from storage at the old Germiston Steam Depot for their 400km journey to Sandstone Estates in the eastern Free State of South Africa.

The locomotives to be moved are Class 15F 3052, “Avril”, previously owned by the late David Shepherd, Class 25NC 3488, GMAM Garratt 4079, ex-Rhodesia Railways Class DE2 diesel electric 1207 and ex SAR steam crane number 578.

Our photo gallery shows the extensive preparation required for such an operation. Loading is expected to be completed by Wednesday, 3rd November (today) with arrival at Sandstone scheduled for Friday, 5th November.

Keep an eye on our website (www.sandstone-estates.com) for ongoing updates on the move.

A total of 11 heavy Low Loaders are involved.

    Kind regards,

    Louise Norton
On behalf of the Sandstone Team

For those unfamiliar with these diminutive NGG16 Garratts I would recommend a visit to the Welsh Highland Railway where a journey between Porthmadog and Carnarvon will quickly earn admiration of these locomotives. For those familiar with them on home territory in Natal the WHR provokes memories of happier days in South Africa. The Vale of Rheidol has now added one to it fleet so a visit to Aberystwyth now looks to be on the cards once Covid lockdowns disappear.

    Sandstone update.

I noticed that the steam crane was a Cowans Sheldon of Carlisle, the only working example that I have seen was in Buenos Aires so I guess they were exported all over the world.

This refers to the History of Sandstone; having purchased the book and read it I think there is much for the UK preservation movement to read as I suspect many will find the advice worthy of bearing in mind. An obvious comment, though often ignored, is the opinion (from experience) that whilst restoring an item is both expensive and time consuming so is the maintenance and operation of the artefact - and latter is so often ignored to the risk of the artefact's future. There is much more revelations and experiences that are worthy of note but buying the book will be worth the money IMHO as both a good read and food for thought by those involved in preservation.

This looks interesting; having photographed the 25NC at Sekonyela in 1978 / 80 I can confirm it is a classic location and the extension of the narrow gauge line will see the restoration of classic locations for future photography.

Pity that the mountain section has gone, but I am fortunate that I saw and got videos of the locos at work there.
