The UK's biggest rail union is threatening a national strike because of pay rows in Cumbria and Scotland.

The Rail Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) is accusing Network Rail of refusing to negotiate settlements in disputes involving 500 staff. The disputes involve 400 signallers in Scotland as well as 100 RMT members in Cumbria, whose bonuses were withheld following a crash in Grayrigg. Network Rail said the RMT's approach was "wholly unnecessary".

Rail union calls off strike plans

Transport unions have called off strike action which was scheduled to affect services in Scotland and Cumbria.

The Rail Maritime and Transport union (RMT) made the announcement after receiving an improved pay offer from Network Rail. The union's members had been due to walk out on Friday in protest against part of their bonus being docked.
