We had a lovely day last Wednesday for our annual Summer visit while staying in Blue Dolphin caravan park at Filey, thankfully visiting on the only day of our weeks holiday that didn't feature heavy rain and 45mph winds! Took advantage of our free return pass we got from last October's visit to travel from Pickering to Grosmont and return and film in between. 92134, 44806, 80136 & D7628 in action, filmed at Pickering, Levisham, Grosmont and Goathland...

Glad you had a good day I was there also on that Wednesday. I hope you got a seat. On the trains I went it was standing only due to a shortage of serviceable coaches.

It was certainly busy! I wondered if everyone had looked at the weather and chosen the only day without rain. Got quite lucky on the 2.40 back, it was already full arriving at Grosmont from Whitby but a kind Dad/Grandad/Son let my son sit with them, the kids then played quite happily sharing toys for next hour and a half which worked well, and my father-in-law got a seat in the 4 across and luckily the other three got off at Goathland so we could grab the other 3 before anyone else got on!

The staff have said previously that the trains are busier in bad weather, we were down on Sunday, glorious day and the trains were quiet.

I can see the logic of that, I was keeping an eye on the webcams throughout the week to see what services had steam on and the railway looked busy most the time, even in some less than summer like weather. Certainly Wednesday felt extremely busy which can only be a good thing.

Just went and looked on the Grosmont Railcam. I have to say what a treat for the eyes 37 254 is in its 'Rail Blue' livery. A credit to those involved.

Why not just look at the daily roster on the website for 20 seconds and get the same information?

Well yea I did/do that also, although i have found before that sometimes what actually runs does not always match the published rota. To elaborate on what I said/meant I was checking in on the webcam to see what hauled the final two trains to Pickering each day really, as they would then - subject to issues on the day of course - haul the first two trains out. Although it’s only 40 minutes drive from Blue Dolphin to Pickering we needed to commit to going before the rota would be published, and having seen people people turned away on our previous visit last October when they didn’t have pre-booked tickets we also wanted to book the night before. Having seen two steam leave Grosmont for Pickering the night before it gave me confidence to book for the next day.

I’ll back this up; the last two times I’ve travelled on NYMR, the booked traction has changed on the day. In fact I think on both occasions we were meant to be diesel hauled back from Whitby and ended up behind steam - a win for me!

I can't imagine an eight coupled locomotive having a great time heading to Whitby if am A4 is also not having a good time.

The S160 has a fixed coupled wheelbase of only 15ft 6in, which is less than that of many 6-coupled types.

I guess the implication of “first full-size locomotive to be converted” in the press release is “first locomotive capable of hauling a decent train” ;)
