Thing is they would quietly disappear if so many people weren't obsessed with the bloke and promote his schemes far and wide.

Just building on that comment, the 1-CO-CO-1 wheel arrangement imposes some limits on where the Peaks can go.

No obsession here, just puts the movement in a poor light, and makes people wonder if all are so mis managed????

I'm not sure that you should - I'd understood that there were obligations on the owner of something containing asbestos to ensure that the new owner can deal with it properly. Otherwise it'd be too easy to just pass it on and see stuff dumped.

My reading of his FB page (I'm not going to add to his stats by clicking again to double-check though) was that he wanted to raise money to buy and restore it. Which as aspirations go is a fine one to have. However, even if I had the £1M+ needed to make this a viable project, the last thing I would do is hand it over to someone on a FB page.

I wouldn't worry too much anyway. In 1,000 years time, when Brexit and the UK and the Battlefield Line and everything else are mere footnotes in history, there will still be a campaign going to restore the pile of iron filings where 45015 used to be. It's just one of those things.

It is illegal to sell anything containing asbestos. However, there is an exemption for heritage vehicles: https://www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos/assets/docs/heritage-vehicle-exemption-certificate.pdf This lays down some conditions that need to be complied with.

It will probably get rolled over again - I'm think it has to get rubber stamped every 5 years or so.

What's the score with cars out of interest - some manufacturers were using odd bits of asbestos into the mid 80s (I seem to recall an E reg Nissan my dad had, with a factory applied asbestos warning sticker under the bonnet).

Noooooooo. The thing is with our hero is that his skills, expertise and ability to lead teams of volunteers to achieve the impossible is not limited to mere steam driven motive power. Rolling stock, steam or diesel locomotion all gets the benefit from this multi-skilled powerhouse of heritage engineering! I heard on the grapevine his name has been mooted on the draft list for a CBE in the next round of awards.

45015, why? It was, apparently a demic when withdrawn and now there's probably pretty much nothing on it that's salvageable. It's not as if it's unique anyway, how many Peaks are preserved already? 10,11?

Edit, checked 12 class 45s,with two 44s and three 46s. 46009 has a better chance of being restored.

That's a common misconception. Tinworms aren't actually a worm or a caterpillar; they are a small, ferrophagic variety of mollusc.
