According to the new owners on the L&BR website they won't anymore.

Perhaps you could say where you saw that, as the L&B website does not say that as far as I can see…

Words fail me, The L&B, through one of it's organisations has just purchased something that will be of immense value to the railway, and local community, and yet, there are some who quibble about if discounts are going to be offered to members, In my view any discounting should be given to people who use the pub and restaurant on a regular basis, and show loyalty to it, its got to be a business, first and foremost, but some seem to be on their own personal crusade and nothing the various groups do, to obtain land, to finance the future that one day will see the line expand back to former locations, that it left before the second world war, seems to be right.

As the person who raised the question of discounts in the first place, it was not intended to be a 'quibble' - merely an simple query.

By all means have a discount scheme for regular pub customers (one of the pubs that I visit occasionally has just such a scheme), but my query was specifically about the (working) volunteers - as opposed to the wider Trust membership as a whole - who, after all, are surely the people who have helped to make the L&BR what it is today and therefore deserve some form of recognition? Equally the shareholders who have contributed towards the purchase of the OSHI might also get similar recognition.

If there will not be any discounts, then so be it - no big deal.

AIUI, there is a discount to be offered off food and drinks to OSHI shareholders?
Presumably they will be issued with some sort of i/d card rather than having to produce their share certificates?

No doubt we will be advised in due course. It is not the most important issue for the new owners to consider at the moment !

The new manager seems to hav a good reputation in the area. Next job for him is to keep the existing restaurant and pub staff motivated to continue to provide a good, but cost effective service and it normally gets good online reviews I notice googling the news the Restaurant Guru website had a bad review Sunday.

Don't think by the wording it was malicious and connected to the railway taking over, but something for the new manager to find out what happened.

Define "disgusting" though, no reason why it was is given. I had a work colleague who would regularly complain over anything to try to get a discount or freebie. Need a lot more than one comment to mean anything really
We sat in the pub at Grosmont one evening and heard a party of four say they were going to Whitby as there was nothing on the menu they wanted. Later that night they posted a Trip Advisor report saying how bad the food was. Due to something they had added to the post they were easy to identify, and my wife "outed" them on Trip Advisor for not even having eaten there.

How could it be? The railway hasn't taken over yet.

They haven’t, but the news of the purchase is on the OSHI website, so it is possible for some sour grapes, although not necessarily the case but facts don’t always stop keyboard warriors.

If it was sour grapes, I would've thought they'd have mentioned the railway, along the lines of 'since the railway took over, everything has gone downhill'
I suspect, as suggested earlier, that this was probably an attempt to get a discount, or someone expecting Heston Blumenthal to be in the kitchen!

I am told there were adverse comments on the 'North Devon News' facebook page - but these were on the lines of 'lets hope it gets better with the new owners'.

If the grapes were sour, that would be a reason to complain at a restaurant :)

(Sorry - I'll get my coat. And while doing so, ponder what it is in the water around Exmoor that makes railway enthusiasts so fractious there. You get the sense that on certain railways, you could walk into a deserted mess room and emerge ten minutes later with a black eye ...)

As said it was a possibility in that I would never discount keyboard warriors but also happen to agree that it’s unlikely to be the case here.
