Austerity No.25 Northiam is reaching the paint stage at the KESR. With the USA tank hopefully out next month, I believe it is hoped that October will see Northiam out and running again. Fingers crossed.

The weather was good and all went well. The boiler was lifted from the frames and then the frames lifted from the wheels.

The big end bearings are now nicely scraped in, and the pistons have passed the "bump test" to establish the limit of travel. Mick is making new piston cotter wedges; his first effort was true to drawing, but the slot had been enlarged, so he is making another one.

Boiler is due for out of frames hydraulic and steam tests next Wednesday, 30th Aug. Hopefully I will be reporting a successful outcome this time next week.

Hunslet 2387 'Brookes No.1' formally returned to service on the Middleton Railway today. Should be in use for the next few weekends (usual caveats.) DSC_0269[1].JPG )

Andrew Barclay 2292 @ Fife Heritage Railway

Fife Heritage Railway have announced the beginning of a feasibility study to restore Andrew Barclay 0-4-0 (Dysart Colliery). Frames are in relatively good condition, the main stumbling block (as always) is the boiler. Thought to require new inner FB, stays, tubeplates and smokebox.

    More to be announced soon.

Could be a good opportunity for @stuartreeder to join with you for a batch order of boiler parts if the boilers are similar?

He's still doing the rounds then? Stuart has asked myself and my committee a number of times regarding this boiler. Not only does it not fit his model, we have alternative plans should a return to steam not be an option.

Yes he's still about! I wasn't sure if the boilers were compatible, but I was just trying to give him a lead for advice. Not that he'll listen mind you....

No I do not currently volunteer
I'm already in talks with a company for getting a new boiler made from scratch.

Pleased to report a very successful day. We started with the out of frames hydraulic at 215 psi (1 1/3 X working pressure) then followed with out of frames steam test.

Interesting that you've done the hydraulic to 1 1/3rd of working pressure. That's a BR thing perpetuated by the ORR. Industrial practice was always 1½ times WP in accordance with the Factories Act. It is at the discretion of the Competent Person but those that I've had dealings with have always gone for the hydraulic test pressure originally stamped on the boiler.

I copied @Steve comment above to our Boiler Inspector/Competent Person. I have received his reply in which he explains his criteria for boiler testing and I am happy that we are testing to current requirements.

I've always had it that a steel boxed boiler goes to 1.5 x WP, copper boxed 1.25 x WP, except some new builds, where 2 x WP can be required for the first test only...

The ORR publication "The Management of Steam Locomotive Boilers" suggests hydraulic test pressure of 1 1/3 x working pressure rounded to nearest 5 psi and a steam test pressure 10 psi over normal working pressure. It does not seem to differentiate between steel, copper or new fire boxes.

    John,
I've never come across 1.25 x WP for copper boxes. Where has that one come from?
