CHANNEL Tunnel operator Eurotunnel has appointed Francois Coart as Director for Rail Freight Development with responsibility for launching activities by the Europorte 2 subsidiary, which obtained a licence as a railway operator in February, 2004.

Coart, who has duel French and Belgian nationality and has previously worked at Bombardier and Alstom Transport, will report directly to Jacques Gounon, who is chairman and chief executive of Eurotunnel and of Europorte 2.

Eurotunnel currently carries freight vehicles on its Le Shuttle trains and licences other operators to send freight trains through the tunnel but does not operate its own freight trains beyond the tunnel perimeters.

Arrangements for the use of the tunnel by other freight and passenger train operators are scheduled to expire in November this year.
