I wonder if anybody can give an update on the current Embsay steam fleet situation and what might be in traffic next year and better still ask if a steam weekend will take place after missing this year.

    From looking at the website I have found out the following;

Cumbria on 1 year loan from Furness Railway Trust.

Monckton No 1 taken out of service for 10 year overhaul?

    Darfield - repaint underway?

Beatrice, Illingworth, Warspite & No 22 on the come back trail?

Look forward to hearing what is happening from those in the know.

Fingers crossed that a Harvest of Steam or similar can return next year with the home fleet.

    All the best

    Best Regards

Darfield had a bottom end overhaul. HE 3844 No.22 Austerity was on loan to the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Railway the other week from the Nene Valley Railway although i'm not aware how long that is staying for.

22 was hired in for a short while from Scunthorpe following the FRT's Cumbria failing with a cracked firebox. Cumbria is still with us and repairs are being investigated.

Several locos are being looked into for 2011 - details will be released once things are confirmed / progress is made.

To confuse matters, OUR No22 (Barclay) had its boiler sent away for the fitting of the new firebox, and most of the rest of it is complete. Beatrice is being painted steadily, Warspite continues with boiler work being tackled, Illingworth's boiler needs more work...

Cumbria will not be repaired - the boiler inspector says 'no'.

5643 will be coming through again for the Santa Season.

Austerity 'Norman' will be landing this week (all being well) for completion of its overhaul before entering traffic for a year initially. This is owned by Southern Locomotives Ltd, and was formerly on the KESR. It has never run in preservation.

Darfield's repaint is being lined up (looking like post-Christmas) following our new Locomotive Operating Manager's appointment.

Beatrice is slowly being painted - not much else needs doing, but it is not anticipated this year...

Illingworth has suffered a major setback with the boiler inspector declaring work done on the firebox to be unsatisfactory, requiring the box to come out, and another £30k+ spending as the contractor has gone bankrupt. The owner is not amused.

Primrose's progress will be similarly slow.

No.22's boiler is away for the new firebox to be fitted - Easter should see it returned to Embsay, but timescales ont hese things are always subject to change.

Some work has been done on Annie, more work continues on Harry's boiler (for Warspite).

More details will land on the website soon, I hope!

Thank you Tim for a very informative update - much appreciated.

Best of luck with all the work that lies ahead for those involved in the overhauls.

Fingers crossed that you feel able to include a steam weekend in your 2011 plans.

    All the best

I am pretty certain last time I was at Embasy (a long time ago) there was a load of narrow gauge stuff there! Was there?

That's a pretty gloomy picture there, Tim, and I don't envy the new Locomotive Manager in his task. I'd be interested to hear about the problems with the firebox for Illingworth but I'll understand if this isn't something that you would wish to be aired on the Forum. One reason for this is that I've had experience of boiler inspectors wrongly condemning work in the past (although I'm not saying that this is the case, here!)

"Darfield No.1" will not be running at Embsay in 2011 as it is returning to Llangollen Railway in early January after Santa Duties and from Llangollen onwards to hire elsewhere for the 2011 season.

Good loco, hope to catch up with it elsewhere.

Any latest on how the steam fleet looks for 2011?

    Many thanks in advance

Sat 30th April - Mon 2nd May Embsay “Mixed Traction weekend”

Although subject to confirmation, we are hoping to hold a Mixed Traction weekend featuring Steam engines and Diesels on a variety of services including Stately Trains and goods trains. When more details are available, they will feature here!

I am looking forward to the event, gives me 2 visits to line this year instead of one, very pleased.

Best of luck for the event

Aren't mixed traction days generally what happens when there is a shortage of locos of one type or the other?

If you read the thread you can see that is the case.

Also, the fact there wasnt a steam gala at all means that this year were trading gently and at least the steam locos get a run out on the Goods train etc.

I'm looking forward to it. Should be Norman's first runs on a goods train since industry and hopefully see Beatrice out and about again.

    Cheers,

    Smiler

Norman got on very well yesterday, leaving the crew with big smiles on their faces!

Beatrice is next on the list for completion, and Illingworth's boiler is now once more a kit of parts, thus allowing the job to be put right...

Primrose is seeing some progress with the axleboxes due for attention - I think the timescale is that they are due back for Easter (yes, there have been issues...).

Just as an aside, the BBC TV "Antiques Roadshow" programme yesterday was from Bolton Abbey, and the lady compere, whose name escapes me, arrived behind Monckton. Presumably filmed last summer, but what good publicity for the line. We made a mental note to visit this year, looks a lovely setting.

Good news about Norman and the continuing work on the other 3.

Does that give you a possible fleet of 4 during the course of this year?

Does the mixed traffic weekend have the official go ahead yet please?
