Embankment Collapse on the Vale of Rheidol

Recent extreme weather has caused major flooding in Aberystwyth and the surrounding area. The floods have caused a lot of damage to homes and properties in the local villages.

The Vale of Rheidol line has suffered too with the collapse of a section of embankment between Aberystwyth Cricket Club and Glanyrafon as the force of the water from the River Rheidol undermined the embankment. The rails and sleepers are currently suspended in mid air.

Naturally, services have had to be suspended whilst reconstruction work takes place which we hope will only take a few days. We'll be back up and running as soon as we can!

Sad news, but not to bad to put right.
At least the Conwy Valley track stayed in place this year (so far).

 

Annoying and sad when it happens, but in the grand scheme of things, it could of been a lot worse.

 

I love the VoR, so here's hoping that the repairs are easy to implement and that you're back up and running in no time. At least it happened at the end of half term!

ITV cameras were on the scene earlier today however by the time they had arrived we'd already ripped the track out to ready for a contractor to move in. We hope to be back up and running in the next few days

In fairness to the SVR, the VoR's washout is much, much smaller...

Absolutely. The comparison is a poor one.

 

I am pleased to announce that the Vale of Rheidol Railway is back in business. The embankment has been rebuilt in record time and we will be operating the full published service as of tomorrow - 15th June 2012. Not bad considering the collapsed embankment was only discovered on Sunday 10th!

I feel particularly sorry for all the passengers who turned up at our stations expecting trains who left disappointed. We hope as many as possible will come and see us again some point. We tried as hard as we could to spread the word about the closure but not everyone checks the web / telephones / Tourist Info / facebook etc!

Thanks to everyone for all your kind words and offers of assistance. Luckily our damage was on a totally different scale to the SVR. Thankfully such events are pretty rare!
