ENGLISH, Welsh and Scottish Railway (EWS) has secured a new track access contract with Network Rail that provides guaranteed access to the rail network until the end of 2015.
Keith Heller, EWS Chief Executive, said: “This long-term contract is a milestone in achieving significant growth in freight by rail. Extensive work by teams at Network Rail, the Office of Rail Regulation and EWS has produced an agreement that will give confidence to customers, investors and other stakeholders that rail freight can be certain of its place on the rail network."

Mr Heller continued: “Based on the standard contractual clauses incorporated into all freight operators’ contracts the agreement gives EWS permission to use the entirety of the rail network enabling it to meet its agreements with customers. This is the longest track access agreement ever held by EWS and will help us to build freight traffic within the UK and also to and from Europe."

EWS said the long-term contract is designed to give stability and certainty to customers in order to attract greater volumes of freight to rail. It also reflects the policies contained in the Government’s rail White Paper, the European Commission’s railway directives and the Office of Rail Regulation’s policy on long-term access agreements.
