Hopefully she will be turned around fairly quickly- with the crab being out of use the ELR home fleet must be feeling a bit thin on the ground?

34092 City of Wells last day in service before overhaul. A quick iPhone pic whilst taking water at Rawtenstall in the late afternoon sun.

Hasn't that last ten years flown by. Here's my take of Wells penultimate trip to Rawtenstall

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Wells. Here is a Derek Cross picture of my first run behind it on 7/4/60, just days after my 9th birthday. The train is a special to Dover conveying pilgrims to Rome for Easter to celebrate the centenary of The Universe, a weekly Catholic publication. It was only years later that I discovered the loco involved and that it carried a headboard. 60-4-7 34092 copy.jpg
20 years later in April 1980 I witnessed its relaunch after restoration at Keighley - was that really 42 years ago now?

It's getting scary Peter - I watched 34092 move off Haworth Shed at the 1979 Enthusiasts' weekend, late in the evening, still in undercoat. I was 9 at the time. Each 10-year cycle seems to come around faster and faster these days. I am now 52.

Are the ELR doing it in-house? I'm idly wondering how long it'll be, per the comment above about the generally sound bottom end.

I was there. Stood in the dark in the cutting leading into Mytholmes Tunnel as it came up the valley on a passenger train. 0-6-0PT couples inside as insurance. I still have the sound recording.

Your not getting old, one or two of my old notebooks have somehow survived and I’ve got it marked down as seen at Stewart’s Lane in 1959 !

It certainly feels it, when I think of all the mainline steam I saw back in the early '80s, then think "S***, that's 40 years ago"... I can remember it as though it were yesterday!

A very nice memory! I have a photo somewhere, taken in Haworth Shed Yard on my Kodak instamatic... I'll dig it out sometime and post it. It's very dark, but may clean up.

I like Wells a good bit too. This boiler ticket flew by fast and there was a lot of consistency in successful operations too. Fantastic

A loco that would have done much for the class were it to have remained on the main line but in safe hands anyway.

Why the snobbishness about mainline running? Far far more people would be able to experience the loco (see it up close, ride behind it, get on the footplate ...) on a preserved railway than would ever be possible on the mainline.

You say thay Alan but who would have stumped up the five, or even six figure, sum to fit all the necessary kit that is now required for main line running. We didn't think so at the time but it was so much easier (and cheaper) to run on the main line back in the 80s/90s than it is today.

Are you prepared to write the cheque to make it happen then?
