THE Australian version of Britain’s HST high-speed train — the XPT — has been withdrawn from services between Sydney and Melbourne while the whole fleet is checked for axle faults.

The rear bogie of an XPT power car came off the rails on a Melbourne to Sydney train while approaching Harden station in New South Wales on Thursday, prompting a safety audit of axles.

As a precaution an inspection programme was under way on the wheels sets of all XPT power cars and all 12 daily services across NSW had been suspended, reported the Australian Associated Press.

Vince Graham, chief executive of RailCorp, the train operator, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation the XPTs will not run until the company is confident the trains are safe.

"The process of inspecting these engines will go on over the next few days and depending obviously on what those inspections find will determine when we safely reintroduce the XPTs to service," he said

Coach services will replace trains between Melbourne and Sydney while the XPT fleet is inspected.
