Are steam trains returning to be able to start at Crewe and do Crewe-Shap-Carlisle-S&C-Crewe? I just noticed that the Fall CME tour is advertised as such.

There has never been anything stopping tours from changing locos over at Crewe; most tour companies just choose not to as steam can run non stop from Carnforth to Carlisle whereas swapping locos at Crewe means a water stop at Carnforth anyway. The already mentioned CME on October 4th is swapping at Crewe with 86259 giving way to 46115 & PMR's Appleby Explorer does likewise on the same day swapping from Diesel to 46233 at Crewe before running to Appleby via Shap & Upperby.

And also the loco pool based at Crewe will be used as usual for the regular Scarborough Flyers, NWCE and the Cumbrian Mountain expresses.

It has been awhile because most of the time steam has been put on at Carnforth and the Crewe pattern has been doing the Settle and Carlisle 1st and Shap second.

The ones where steam goes on at Carnforth are those starting in London meaning that the steam section has to be shorter to give reasonable start and finish times, now we get to the holiday season where the start and finish is Crewe or Liverpool, so there is not the need for the long drag with electric haulage.
