Out of interest, the last overhaul which was partly funded by the idiot tax was supposedly done to mainline standards so she could run on the big railway. Then it never happened and she has spent her ticket on the MHR. Out of curosity, what was the technical reasons behind that? What didn't work out?

850 did have a brief spell of running on the network but was stopped with boiler problems IIRC. Hasn't the air braking system and main line gubbins been removed as well now?

Part of the brick arch collapsed on one return run from Bristol, and the engine was stopped at Westbury on July 8th 2007.

Did the engine run again on the mainline after that tour?

Hardly a reason to withdraw it from the mainline, there must have been some other considerations ?

Following a number of issues on the mainline, the engine was withdrawn by the NRM to York to diagnose the boiler issues.

After several running in attempts at the GCR and GWSR to try to resolve the issues, eventually Nellie moved to the MHR to be run and has been there since with the MHR resolving the boiler and motion issues. Nellie has for the past few years put in sterling service and is still in the prime of health despite being months away from withdrawal.

Wasn't there a 'resurrection programme' to get her back on the mainline a few years ago (IIRC this was when she had become resident at the MHR)?

According to the MHR web site today. 850 Lord Nelson isn't rostered after 24th. So that's it until the next overhaul is completed. Unless one of the service locos fails between Boxing Day and New Year's Eve.

I'm most likely wrong but didn't the boiler/firebox problem raise it's ugly head when 850 was at the ELR.

P.S. I wonder what the white van man said when he saw the sturdy crossing gates being closed?
There's no chance of dodging round the crossing barriers with those hefty things.:)

Mid-Hants has just said on Facebook that 850 will be running on December 26 and 27 - then that's it.

To be discussed with the NRM early next year, IIRC. I think she's welcome to stay at the MHR. They've sorted out most of the gremlins now, she's well-liked and pretty reliable. She won't be going main-line whilst in MHR care, though. Unless some other group comes up with funding and a thorough plan...?

    850 Lord Nelson

On the last day of 2015 the boiler certificate ran out on Southern Railway 4-6-0 850 Lord Nelson after almost ten years service since it last overhaul. Over those ten years I have come across Lord Nelson a few times as seen in this collection.
