76017 steams again after 20 years

    A former stalwart of the Mid-Hants Railway is about to return to action, with the first steaming of BR ‘4MT’ 2-6-0 No. 76017 for two decades.

    Following a six-year overhaul at Ropley Works, the Riddles ‘Mogul’ was lit up for the first time on July 8, and made its first moves under its own steam up the Ropley headshunt on July 11.

    MHR Managing Director Colin Chambers told Steam Railway that it is hoped to have the engine in traffic by the beginning of August, ready for the ‘Watercress Line’s’ ‘Thomas’ event of August 6-14.

    It will be one of the star attractions at the MHR’s ‘Autumn Steam Gala’ on October 21-23, for which No. 46100 Royal Scot is the first confirmed guest.

    Rescued from Barry in 1974 and initially taken to Quainton Road, No. 76017 steamed for the first time in preservation in May 1984. It last ran in the mid-1990s.
