    It's not the first and won't be the last that something unexpected happens mid service period. It is an old piece of machinery and these things happen. Not also the 1st that have decided to go for a new 10 year boiler ticket after a major happenning either. What did seem impressive was once back at base how quick it was finished with faultless proving runs and back into service. Others which seem to be taking a while get a lot of criticism but no one seems to notice when there is a textbook finish to in service.

    As a matter of interest, before this round of repairs, how much of the firebox remained from BR days or was any part of it ever replaced since the loco was preserved?

    I don’t know is the short answer but I could try and find out. The current boiler, no 1121, is its fourth last on 35002 I think. Like all locomotives parts got swapped at heavy general overhauls, the last ten had fabricated rear trucks but 28 has one of the earlier cast ones, probably changed over at a general overhaul in early 1964 as there are pictures of it with the original truck in 1961
