2014 August - Out and About on the Talyllyn Railway

Discussion in 'On Track.' started by Karen Willans, Aug 11, 2014.

    Pics from the last week

Pendre shed doors have had an overdue makeover and the portals newly whitewashed. The doors are now Hollybush green again. The plan is to replace the shed windows in the near future. Thanks to the loco volunteers at Pendre for doing such a good job of the doors.

The strimming weekend went well, with the worst of the overhanging brambles near Brynglas Bridge being cut back.

The Friday Works train achieved more boscage collection from various locations and dropping off at the Quarry Siding burn site. The hedges along Six Bends were cut back to save scratching our carriages. More boscage was collected on the way down the line and taken to Ty Mawr burn site.

Work on No 1 Carriage is progressing with work on the brake hanger pins complete. They just need putting back on now. The carriage is also back on it's wheels.

Loco No 1 Talyllyn's new coupling rods have arrived and work is progressing well.

Llechfan Garden Railway was open throughout the Talyllyn's Beer Festival. Wharf Station was very busy over the weekend, with the Friday night fish and chip supper sold out, and the Saturday night barbeque going well. Several beers were on sale over the weekend with many selling out by Saturday night.

The highlight of the week (from the garden railway point of view!) was the Grand Opening of the new Compton Down Railway Museum. Possibly the smallest museum in Wales, it was formally opened by TR volunteer and National Railway Museum Curator Anthony Coulls. It even got a mention on the National Railway Museum's Facebook page.

You can see more pictures from the weekend on the Llechfan Garden Railway Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/llechfan?fref=ts

For those of you who remember the work the TR undertook on the bell from St Michael's Church, Llanfihangel-Y-Pennant, the bell is now back up in the tower. The church is well worth a visit. There are some lovely walks in this area, many of which you can do starting from our stations at Abergynolwyn or Nant Gwernol.
