Replica Novelty at Science Museum in the early 80s?

I am looking for some information about the replica of Novelty and the original parts that have survived. So far I have that the replica was built in 1980 for the Rocket 150 event. Replica was built to last no longer than the 3 days I believe. Novelty was steamed on a small number of occasions in Manchester. Around 1982, it was sold to the Swedish Railway Museum, and left the UK. It returned to make a brief visit to the Museum of Science and Industry during the September of 2005.

My Questions are.
1) What was actually at the Science Museum around 1981,were the original parts incorporated into the replica in 1980 or later? When visiting the Science Museum in the early 80s if the parts where not incorporated, when were they added. Tried to find a photo from that period, but alas not found one so far from the early 80s at the science Museum. I presume it was the full replica that was on show, but like I said very difficult to find a photo from the early 80s at the science Museum. Also where was the exhibit at the Science Museum, can't see it in the line of Rocket and Sans Pareil engines in the photos I have seen so far from the early 80s at Science Museum.

2) Looking for when did the replica arrive at the MOSI in Manchester, Looking for the actual date of arrival and the date it left?

3) Also looking for the actual date when it arrived back at the MOSI in Manchester 2005 and date when it left again.

IIRC the working replica of Novelty went to MOSI soon after 'Rocket 150' at Rainhill in late May 1980. It was still there in the Summer when the events centred on Liverpool Rd and the cylinders from the original were on display there (and may still be). I doubt that it was intended for the 1980 replica only to last 3 days - where did you get that information from? I didn't know that any Novelty had been displayed in the Science Museum - I'm assuming it was a non-working replica. Sorry I can't be more exact but I'll carry on looking. Ray.

 

The information about Novelty is on Wikipedia, but not exact dates and doesn't mention it being at the Science Museum London. In the Railways Restored books by Ian Allen from 1980-82 it has novelty at the Science Museum London. I can only find photos of her at the MOSI in Manchester and not the Science Museum London.

 

According to Platform 5's "Preserved Locomotives of British Railways" (13th Ed., published 2009) there are two versions of 'Novelty'. One was built in 1929 and has some parts from the original loco in it. This was originally at the Science Museum, but in 2009 was listed as being at MoSI. It is part of the National Collection thus belonging to the Science Museum/NRM. It is therefore possible this has been displayed at one time or another at South Kensington.
The other was a new-build in 1980, by Locomotive Enterprises for the 150 anniversary of the Rainhill trials, and it is this one that is now resident in Sweden.

 

Cheers John, Thats why I was a bit puzzled. Didn't realise there are two replicas, just re-read the wiki pedia information and according to Railway Restored it was the 1929 version at the science Museum in London. This replica was also rebuilt in 1988 to include batteries and an electric motor to allow it to move , is this when it moved to the MOSI for the rebuild.

 

Richard Hill's paper The North Western Museum of Science and Industry: Some Reminiscences says the 1929 replica includes all four wheels and a cylinder from the original Novelty. He also confirms an electric motor was fitted to turn the wheels & motion and says another original cylinder survived, separately from the replica.

I found this on the BBC i player of the Great Railway Cavalcade: Rocket 150 at Rainhill. Which includes the 1980 replica of Novelty, which had to get a lift down the track .
