Standish Junction, by the looks of it. I was there, too.

Great video but who is that idiot with a tripod close to the line on Sapperton with no hi-vis clothing on? I can only assume he was trespassing.

Nice running to Worcester. V quick to Glos after an assured climb up Horsfield bank. Blasted up Sapperton 30 into the tunnel with 430 tons gross. A few checks between Oxon and Shrub Hill but going well when allowed to. Ray Churchill out. Ray Poole home.

Watched her drift over the Severn at Worcester, looks rather splendid in the early evening sunshine here.

On a hot day of blue sky and green countryside Evesham Marina provides a dash of colour as 34046 eases slowly over the River Avon.

Oh yes, of course. I had confused myself by thinking that steam only came on at Gloucester.

Best never to assume unless you know a location personally.

First location is Standish Junction where the Bristol and Swindon lines split south of Gloucester.

A few video stills from me (video editing in progress, should be up sometime tomorrow) from an excellent day out chasing. Good to see a few familiar faces about. Locations are Narroways Junction, Haresfield, Frampton Mansell, Compton Beauchamp, Broad Campden, Malvern Wells, and Pilning.

The rest of today continued as it had started with Braunton the master of the job and making light work of what must be one of the most varied and demanding routes on the day trip circuit. In my view it has everything: some spells of fast running, a few challenging climbs (Sapperton, Malvern, Llanvihangel), interesting switchback sections and some stunning scenery.

As I mentioned earlier, Ray Churchill helped to make Sapperton seem far less of a challenge than it really is and the run across to Worcester was lively but we were a bit too close behind the service train for it to be unchecked. However it was Ray Poole who really made Braunton sing.

We started the climb up to Colwall from a 10 mph signal check at the foot of the 1 in 120. Ray wound her up to the low thirties by Great Malvern and then held 28 on the two miles or so of 1 in 80 to the top. But I wasn't prepared for what happened after the Hereford stop. We shot up to Red Hill and bowled along to Pontrilas hitting the high sixties at the foot of the climb to Llanvihangel. Only on the final section of 1 in 100 did we drop below 60 with an ultimate min of 51. Given the speed limts on the line and its switchback nature we covered the 42 or so miles from Hereford to Maindee in only 47 minutes, knocking 4 minutes off what seemed like quite a tight timing.

It is really good to see a rebuilt Bulleid Pacific reminding people what a free steaming and competent Class 7 these locos are. Sadly the opportunities to get behind her big brother Clan Line are few and far between. But clearly Braunton is a welcome addition to the main line fleet.

Thankfully the Met Office were way off the mark. A forecast of wall to wall sunshine would have been more accurate. <BJ>
