    Hello all,

Have just seen this on the Bredgar Blog - three Andrew Barclay diesel mechanical locomotives have arrived at the railway.

Does anyone have any further information on these locomotives? Are they to stay at the railway permanently?

    Cheers,

    Ben

No I do not currently volunteer
I was thinking they look like ex MOD, I saw similar loco"s at East Dean MOD depot a few years ago before it closed, they all seem to be of the same specification.

I got quite excited about these till I saw they are all diesels, thought "the three Bagnalls" must have moved.

I predict that two or maybe all three locos will move on sooner or later. They've done it before. In 1987 they bought three brand new 0-6-0DH Baguleys from a cancelled order. One is now Harlech Castle on the FR, the other two ended up in The Sudan.

Were they all from the same cancelled order as the parts that later became the Brecon Mountain's diesel, the VoR diesel and Criccieth Castle, or am I getting confused?

    Thanks,
    Gareth

Yes i believe 6 were to be built for the Instituto Nacional do Acucar in Mozambique with 3 being completed. The incomplete locos were acquired by the railways mentioned above after the liquidation of Baguley-Drewry.

Actually, the order was for twelve locos. Two were built and delivered (to Sena Sugar, Mozambique - is that the same as what you said?); I'm unsure if they were ever paid for. Six further were built and not delivered - ultimately three went to Bredgar and three to Fiji. And there were four "kits of parts" which went to The Brecon Mountain Rly who built two of them, one for themselves and one for The Rheidol; one (unbuilt) they sold to the FR to become Criccieth Castle and the fourth ended up in The Sudan (with two of the Bredgar ones).

Probably fair to say that the failure of this order killed Baguley.
