One thing they perhaps should do is to ensure the diesel required to take the train to Cromer and bring it back from Sheringham is not attached to the main train all day. Had 9466 been used, a path to Norwich would have to have been found for it and paid for, so this should now be transferred to a diesel. After all such a move presumably has been paid for in the charter train fare by the passengers. Otherwise it simply looks as though this is nothing more than a profiteering move.

They might have based it on 9466 being at the Mid Norfolk Railway like last year.

    Same here.

I just hope the diesel ( if attached)l does not assist and is only used when leading since I am in coach G.

It is a long way to the buffet in coach B and will we be able to get to it with the Kitchen somewhere in the middle of the train.

I am going to ask RTC if they have approx times for the departure of the coach between Norwich and Holt. It should be no more than an hours journey but we could end up at Holt station for 2.5 hours and it quite a long walk into town . The train arrives at Norwich at 11.54 and the train departs Holt at 16.05.

It was mentioned by Tony Streeter in Steam Railway issue 418 August 16 - September 12 that it would be top and tailed by diesel between Norwich and Sherringham.

I think you are clutching at straws here. I hope the same but I can't imagine a 37 being in Norfolk waiting for us somehow. Or whatever it is. I read in an earlier post about weight etc being a factor.

Agreed. I'd be amazed if we didn't have a diesel hanging off the back all day. And, unlike DBS, who know where the off switch is, WCR love them to be burbling away and giving a helpful nudge every now and again. As for the return, I personally would like NR to force WCR to stay with the KX return (as RTT shows currently). Given the day as a whole, there's absolutely no point in coming back (in the dark all the way) down the old GE route to end up being dropped off somewhere in north London with even more of a mission to get to last trains home. It's a good example of trying to do the right thing when actually what everyone will want is just to get back home and pdq.

Then the train should run to Liverpool Street as advertised and for which folks booked.

The thing is turning out to be a farce.... no doubt one which will effect RTC"s future bookings.

The return should via the GE route should have been quicker by about hour since it is a shorter route ( So I understand why RTC and WCR wanted it kept). Based on the times the pathing is a very poor one, so it looks like we must be looped somewhere probably at Colchester or between Colchester and Chelmsford.

I will probably get off the train at Stratford on the return since there are more options than at Highbury, and I know the station.

Aye, you are right but I feel it is something RTC / WCRC could do even at this late stage to put some credibility back into this trip which seems to get worse with each posting.

You're joking, surely as their site implies they are closed this weekend. The RTC says in its letter that 9466 is "out of operation". If they actually mean that the main line ticket has expired. I could understand that although then, if that is true, we are back into the question about why a trip is publicised when it hinges in part on using a locomotive that it is known will not have a current ticket on the date of the trip. Sorry, but things get serious when it's my money they are messing around with and the lack of timely information is not acceptable. There is an answer. Never book until the day. That will cause massive problems for tour operators like the RTC but if that happens it only serves them right, I am afraid.

According to my ticket, and RTT, and UK Steam.. the route is Ely - Cambridge - Hitchen on the return.. not Chelmsford...

That's funny as the timings on the paperwork with my ticket indicate 2240 Stratford and 2250 Highbury so goodness knows what you have been sent. It's almost like those fun Mystery Trips with 4472 when you didn't know anything about the destination till the day and you were given the route a bit at a time on the train. RTT has put a stop to that but we are getting close with this one.

My paperwork gives the same timings.

Thanks Martin. Sorry to doubt the information. So here we have concrete evidence that 9466 is not broken. So why is it not on the Wandering 500? Has WCR refused to work it? Is it out of ticket? Whichever way you look at it, it seems to me that the RTC has a lot to answer for here especially as up to a couple of days ago they were saying that the pannier was going to work the tour. And presumably the extra issue will be that because of the diesel assistance now necessary north of Norwich we will probably also be taking a diesel with us all day.

Someone please tell me that I am completely wrong on this or it doesn't really matter. It just feels as though someone is making life very difficult for the paying public and the answer, if we ever get the truth must lie somewhere between the RTC and WCR.

And don't forget that only a few weeks ago 9466 was romping along with Steam on the Met
