    Steven is it the "Moorlander" set all day during March weekends?

    Many thanks

    B1 Facebook page;

    STOP PRESS! Unfortunately 61264 will not now be running after all this weekend, due to a problem with a clack box. Not a major issue, but means the loco has to be out of steam to repair it, which will happen as soon as possible - more updates to come next week. Sorry for any dissapointment this may have caused..

    Having watched the video in Steven's post, working the Moorlander solo looks a stern test for a class 5 engine, particularly one in " running in" mode.

    Can heavy trains like that be banked, with a diesel if necessary, so that a medium-sized engine up front is not having the proverbial "guts" flogged out of it?

    Looking forward to 61264 returning to regular traffic - she is just right for the NYMR. I have happy memories of her on West Highland duties; in particular the climb on a special from Fort William to Corrour - managed to get a window near the front; unforgettable!

    The B1 can work the diner in first valve according to one of the drivers, albeit at a slow plod.

    That's irrelevant. first valve will still give you full boiler pressure if the speed is slow enough. 70% cut off and first valve will find a balancing speed but it will be slow. B1's and Black 5's are theoretically overloaded on an 8 coach diner and rely on the important bits (cylinder and wheel diameter) not being in 'as built' condition. A black 5 requires a theoretical 24,000 cylinder tractive effort to drag an 8 coach diner round a 13 chain curve on 1 in 49 (and there are steeper bits than that). A Std 4 tank is actually a better bet for such trains because it doesn't have an additional 50 tons of tender to drag around.
