    Just for clarification, three attempts were made using wood blocks and fishplates. By this time it was getting very close to the points. To continue using blocks/fishplates would have risked damaging the track.

    In addition by this time it was around 5pm and getting dark.

    The crane is a steam crane that could have traveled on the track very close to the engine and would appear to me to be a simple lift at the front of the engine.

    I am NOT an expert on lifting just my guess.
