    That is incorrect 100%.

Typical keyboard rumours that is no no where near the facts as to why 78 was sold to SLL

Yes that's exactly what I meant. As said, the Swanage Railway hosts SLL engineering facilities. The Swanage Railway have made it clear to SLL that they require a mixture of locomotives, not just Bulleid Pacifics. So if SLL ignore these requests, they cannot expect the Swanage Railway to continue hosting them in the same way, whilst they continue to churn out more Bulleid Pacifics which the SR doesn't want.

If space and facilities in Herston works were offered to other loco owners, on condition the loco remained based at Swanage for X years, I'm sure it wouldn't take long to find takers.

I always thought that it was due to getting into fiancial difficulties due to the need to service the payments due on a bank loan to cover costs on building the extension after the council told the SR that they would have to build the section to Nordon in addition to the section to Corfe to allow any extension to be opened, this was certainly reported in a couple of the railway mags at the time, but this doesn't mean that is gospal.

As far as I know, the new owner has not made any decision regarding 80078's longer-term use after completion of it's overhaul. In any case, since it's unlikely to be ready until 2-3 years time, its not an urgent decision. I believe that he would like to see it run on a number of railways, but is, at present, well disposed towards Swanage and is well aware of the advantages that the SR offers. I say "at present" because he wishes not to be involved in controversy- that's a major reason for the secrecy about his identity- and if a faction at Swanage are really keen to see the loco back there, they should understand that he reads this thread and its continuation might not be helping their cause!

Flanman, I can see why he would want to stay out of controversy!

I just had a look back through this thread and from what I can gather, pro Swanage posters have actually said nothing against the new owner at all, in fact all I can read is that they wish the new owner the best of luck. I can't find a single Swanage poster who is actually against the new owner in any way.
I think that everyone is in agreement that Swanage supports wish the new owner every success in getting 80078 back into traffic.

The posts are seemingly all against SLLs tactics thats all, its certainly nothing to do with the new owner.

Anyways thats how I read it!

But wasn't the question 'Does anyone know if 72 will be based at Swanage when its overhaul is complete?'

Surely that meant 34072 '257 Squadron'?

Sorry, I'd assumed that Pugwash mean't 80078. It's a long time since I was a spotter and I'm no longer au fait with the finer points of loco numbering! Still, perhaps my post is of interest anyway.

Regarding 007's post, I quite agree, many posters have given fulsome support to the new owner, for which I'm sure that he is grateful, but that wasn't my point. What concerns me is the speculation, for example about the price paid. Part of the deal was that this should remain confidential and whilst some of those who appear to be "digging" for information are doubtless looking for a stick with which to beat SLL, they could end embarrassing both parties.

Perhaps, since this thread has ranged so far and wide from its title, it ought to be re-named "Anti SLL". At least that would be less confusing for outsiders like me!

Indeed the post was of interest even if it was answered without looking at the number! LoL

The sale price is indeed a private matter, it's like a complete stranger asking your wage...it's simply none of your business.

I'm sure Swanage Railway would welcome 78 and its new owner with open arms and you know what I for one hopes this happens one day.
Whenever I have been down to Swanage it has always been a friendly place and one that rarely puts its problems to online forums. I think they deserve credit for holding their tongue on many issues that they have faced, maybe this was just one issue too far. They like others have just as much right to defend their opinion that was clearly against SLL and not the owner.
I do think it maybe has come to an end this now, it's up to SLL and SR to sort out their relationship in the future now. I hope that they will move apart a little, it certainly appears the relationship got too close.
Both organisations have clearly taken a battering on this and I'm sure that any news updates will be officially passed to their respective memberships.

I agree with you a 100%, the two groups have got too close, though I think alot of it comes down to SLL's almost confused stance on it's policies. On one hand they act as a very individual group from the SR, yet on the other they have a long history with line and are expected to supply a large portion of the railway's motive power. They prefer to focus on their beloved pacifics yet the SR desires a more mixed, practical variety of locomotives.

I have great respect for the SLL and what they've achieved, but at times I get the impression they seem to suffer from mixed allegiances, wanting to do their own thing, yet are a intergral part of the fabric and function of the SR and have certain things expected of them.

As for the future I think it's simply the case of balancing their own desires and objectives with that of the SR's, as for all intents and purposes, they are a significant part of each other.

An excellent summing up, hopefully contributors to this thread will calm down and let Swanage Railway and Southern Locomotives sort out their present and future arrangements through sensible negotiation.

Not as simple as that. The way human nature is people tend to figure that a bunch of folks that are trouble for one person will sooner or later be trouble for someone else. Frankly its hard to disagree...

No. And if a printed magazine is recycling rantings on an enthusiast forum, that's pretty lazy journalism and reporting.

    This appeared

"The sale did not go unnoticedby enthusiasts, and nor did it receive universal praise. One blogged on a national website that the locomotive was "sacrilege" to Swannage Railway and that selling it was akin to disposing of the family silver, and another, a Swanage volunteer, said he watched No.80078 leave the railway on October 25 and no one he asked knew where it was going and why. He said that he was at the recent annual general meeting of the Swanage Railway Trust and that nothing had been said about the move then, adding "This is not a way to run a heritage railway" However, the posts were not unanimously critical, with one blogger writing that Southern Locomotives Ltd could do what it wanted with the 2-6-4T, including selling it if it wished to Booth's "for making into tin cans" continuing: "I can only assume 80078 has been sold to someone or somewhere that has intentions to overhaul it , so it seems like a win-win situation. The loco is of no use to Swanage or anybody else sat in a siding.""
