There's also the problem of controlling a large crowd of photographers during a night shoot. Night photography is much more long winded than day photography due to the fact people need to set up tripods, time exposure etc. Too many punters and not everyone will get their turn.

There is also the cost of staff who will be necessary to both police the event and provide the facilities - including movement of the A4s.

People forget that the Museum normally operates 09:00 - 17:00 therefore staff are employed on "regular" hours to meet this timeframe. This special event - should it come off - may see some staff volunteer - and join in the event - but some will be paid due to the nature of their Contracts of Employment plus there are other Museum expenses such as heating and lighting.

In a wider context the price being charged to participants is on a par with other photo charter activities and those prepared to put their hands in their pockets will consider the cost as "value for money". For those of us who appreciate A4s, this is a dream come true and how much is a dream worth ?

I understand that they are outside (not on the concreted area) until asbestos checks have been done then will be moved either onto the concreted area immediately outside the museum building, or inside. However there really isn't room for both inside!

I was told that they are likely to stay where they are until Wednesday. Surprised at your comments re space inside as there seemed to be plenty of space at the weekend (I've never seen it so empty).

Thanks Anthony, though what I meant was, do you know when they will be moved from Shildon or taken off display ?, Im asking on behalf of a friend who wants to take a couple of other friends to see them when other commitments allow you see.

Might make the trip up Friday myself unless my cousin changes the plan.

Phenomenal response over the weekend and we are in a great place with the event looking very hopeful . There are a couple of hurdles yet to clear at least before I get too carried away . Places available both evenings . The plan is that certain line ups will be kept by for those who have so generously contributed to moving No.9 . My thanks to those at the NRM and Locomotion, WCRC and the loco owners, all of whom could have said no with so little time available but have been magnificent in their response. Not least to the enthusiasts who have dug deep to make this happen.

I've just been up to Shildon to see 8 & 10. They're well placed for photos, and they are certainly 'well weathered', particularly 10. I'm glad I've got my photos of their present condition 'in the bag'; I'll watch their refurbishment with interest too.

I hope the photo event goes well :)

Hope they are outside for a while or at weekends; as work and other events mean it will be 21st before I can get down sadly.

    Hello all,

please accept my apologies for asking a question which may have been answered somewhere on the previous 51 pages: How much is the cost of moving the A4s across the Atlantic? That is if we assume all parties involved charged commercial rates which as far as I understand it did not happen.

I am asking because there are some people considering to move an item similar in size to an A4 without tender but slightly lighter over the Atlantic and I feel that the price tag they are talking about is way over the top.

    Kind regards

    Christoph

I don't know the details, but there was commercial sponsorship involved, and a lot of media coverage for the NRM and Moveright (the haulier). "Heritage Railway" seem to have got the exclusive rights to media coverage, and the actual move was filmed for a "Monster Moves" TV programme. So all the companies involved get plenty of free publicity, making them happier to reduce/waive their costs maybe?

In the original press release, there was talk of the NRM getting "direct industry sponsorship", whatever that means.

I don't know about the other companies but I understand the NRM was able to negotiate a special deal with the shipping company that covers this unique situation; whilst not party to the precise details I would imagine that it will be an exclusive price that can't / won't be offered to other customers.

Hi Christoph, I would send an enquiry to Moveright International, Sutton Coldfield, England.
    http://www.moverightinternational.com/
They are the company that moved the A4's from the USA and Canada.
    Cheers,
    Owd Sweedy.

I managed to call in at Shildon yesterday to see the A4s, a real pleasure to see them in their 'raw state'. I'd just like to pass on my thanks to anyone reading this involved with the display, achieved so soon after the loco's arrival. The positioning of the A4's was obviously carried out with thought for both unobstructed viewing and photography - much appreciated!
