Interestingly the 9F has four broken springs according to the Loco department yesterday. Two were replaced and the other two will need replacing soon but will be OK for the Gala.

I also have been informed that two of the springs had to be borrowed from 9F 92240 for a time.

I guess that this is something to expect from aging machines.

    Regards
    Chris:

Pity. After reading the Steam Railway Article, my hopes were raised for a while.

92212 arrived at the SVR last summer with several broken springs (6 if i remember correctly). Perhaps evidence that it is just not a good traveler?

I assume you aren't a fan of her future livery then?

Absolutely not. I wouldn't have minded Manusell era Olive Green, but in my opinion, Bulleid malachite looks fine on the Pacifics and horrible on anything else. The only "Southern" livery which I think is worse is Bulleid Wartime black. The 1940s is a decade best forgotten - austerity, food shortages, horrible fashions, war and its aftermath, and in the main, locomotive liveries too. Whio wants to go back to that terrible time? I know others may disagree with me - the popularity of 1940s events on some lines is ample evidence of that, but I find it hard to get the slightest bit enthusiastic about this period and anything associated with it, sandwiched between the terrific achievements of steam in the 1930s and steam's final fling (which, particularly on the Southern, was quite a show) from the mid 1950s onwarads.

Yes, I think she looks much better in BR guise. And she can double-head with 31806............

Personally i'd rather see her in a different livery and one that will suit the other Maunsell express locomotives that will be on show. Specially as i've seen her in brunswick a couple of times now.

For my taste, seeing a brunswick green King Arthur double head with a BR black U doesn't do much for me.

Personally, as far as I'm concerned. I've seen it in Olive Green and Brunswick Green on many occasions. I don't really care if it turns up in Lincoln Green*! It's coming to the gala and that's all that I really care about.

*Lincoln Green was meant tongue in cheek. As long as it is in an authentic livery it will be a pleasure to travel behind and photograph on the line.

What a shame. Looks like I'm not destined to see this loco! Perhaps a re-booking for the Spring gala? Western mogul not really a substitute, although well done Colin for short notice replacement. Two black moguls double heading would be Ok, or 5322 on a freight....

could you not get another southern engine to replace 30777

    maybe perhaps
    35028, 34070, 34067,
or maybe bring back 35005 from eastleigh
    many thanks

35028 would have been nice but given its commitments to VSOE, it is not a regular visitor to perservation galas so would be somewhat of a coup. 34070 or even 34028 too would be excellent but with the Swanage Gala on the same weekend, that would be highly. Almost as unlikely as as 34067! 35005 is currently better off in Eastleigh out of the elements. 34051, 41312, 73096 and 31874 are already static displays so another (I feel) really would not enhance the event even if it is a MN.

The MHR have done well to get the Mogul at such short notice. Ok it's a GWR Mogul but sure as hell it will make its presence known up Medstead bank!

Lets hope 777 can be revived for the Spring Gala? 777, 31806, 925, 850 and 34007 with 30120 and maybe (with fingers well and truly crossed) 506! A Southern event featuring Drummond, Urie, Maunsell and Bulleid locomotives in 2013 celebrating 90 years since the formation of the Southern Railway? Now that has to be worth waiting for!

I think 5322 is an excellent replacement and take my hat off to those that have arranged it. The Southern and Western met in various locations and therefore 5322 will not really be out of place.

5322 would look good in the yard for the night-shoot with the N.Re-creating scenes from the Ilfracombe - Barnstable line perhaps.

Pity to hear about 30777, however looking forward to photting 5322 and is there any chance she can be paired with the superb rake of BR wagons please?

Disappointing news about 777 but 5322 is a great replacement. Be nice to see and hear her stretching her legs a bit more over "The Alps". Credit to the MHR for getting a replacement loco at fairly short notice. And many thanks to Didcot in allowing the MHR use of 5322.
