I made quite clear that I am only interested in steam traction, not railways in general. If you cannot comprehend plain English that is not my problem!

As above, I surprised the linesiders by never unpacking my camera at Seamer, and as soon as I heard a diesel horn, walking away before it even passed us. A real machine like a 37 or a Deltic is of passing interest, but nothing else.

We are called "the market" and the more we are treated with contempt the less we will spend with the providers - it is really as simple as that. The issue on Saturday was imposed by circumstances, so it stands outside that discussion, but in terms of money paid for experience obtained it is a real and live issue, despite the fact that some people on here get really animated when it is discussed because they seem happy to accept less than they paid for.

I'm not so my decision as to how and where I book will remain very circumspect, but as above, even I would have had to accept last Saturday as "one of those things" and something that is covered by the exclusion clauses.

It seems that after the debacle on the ECML, there was always going to be a problem getting to Scarboro the long way round. I know that the only thing a TOC MUST do is get you to your destination and as the route was the reason for me travelling, I was pleased that we did continue via Hull/Bridlington. Were it not for the fact that the crew managed to gain time and we had a bit of favourable pathing, there was a real chance we wouldn't have got to Scarboro' till 15.30 or later. That would have set the cat among the pigeons!

So you reckon Oakfield isn't a rail enthusiast. If he is who I now think he is, he's done more for loco preservation than many people on this list. I don't agree with his stance on this particular subject but I recognise his right to his opinion.

I think what you are looking for SpamCan is this quote regarding Oakfield and his opinion.
"I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it." (Francois Marie Arouet Voltaire, 1694-1778)

Having read a copy of some DBS/Alliance T&C's in recent years they would clearly state that any customer choosing/specifying non-DBS (3rd party) traction would be allowed to use it only on the proviso that DBS would only pay the "first part" (amounts ammended over the years) of the delay penalty, then after the specified amount each year DBS would invoice the customer via its supply chain for any financial penalties incurred above this amount due to Network imposed penalties deemed to be traction related. The tour organiser would then have to flag the matter up with the loco owner if invoiced and dissatisfied with said issue. As far as I am aware this practice has been there regarding steam traction for a number of years (back to EWS days) and was introduced for diesels around 2009. Past Time Rail had far greater issues than a few financial disputes with DBS re: steam locomotive "delay minutes" as you can't accumulate debts on their scale even if every train encountered loco problems over a few years.

But the crazy part is that NR and the TOC's play multicoloured swap shop all year with bills for squillions, and the end of period thirteen pay each other about twopence halfpenny - keeps accountants in work though.

And what does the paying passenger get out of all this delay compo? - sweet f. a! Its a wonderful world we live in.

Good innit? A friend of mine is a delay attribution clerk and says it's a waste of time. Like you say, it basically evens itself out with the delays being shared out equally between the different TOCs and NR.

That's because a lot of people actually have to deal with the railway the way it exists 'today', not how some nostalgic would like it to be.
Its called 'reality', and no amount of sobbing that it's different to 195x will make the blindest bit of difference.

All you say may be true and I'm sure that people in the railway, if you are one of them, try pretty hard to make the combination all work together, whether it be high speed services, quirky DL trips to remote pieces of track, or (at times slow) steam charters that have to be stopped every few hours for water. That said, with many, albeit armchair, but knowledgeable people around, you can't expect the railway to get away with the odd inept or chaotic activity it sometimes inflicts on itself. Making passengers wait at Peterborough for an hour and a half to board the East Riding last Saturday when it could be seen from the platform 'parked' on the Nene Bridge is just the latest example.

Indeed not, a shambles is a shambles, and one area where the 'Modern Dynamic Thrusting Railway' falls down regularly is service recovery after an incident. In the pecking order I imagine a phone call from East Coast rings the phone louder in NRworld than one from DBS or WCRC about a puffer nutter day out...

Remarks like this are not condusive to a sensible discussion.

Here we go again! At least those comments refer to "objects" & not people.
