REQUEST - Callander & Oban Railway gradient profile

    I don't suppose anybody knows where I can find this? I've scoured the internet to no avail and decided I'll have to put in an order for a second hand copy of John Thomas' book of the same name, but if anybody could help that would be much appreciated. In particular I'm looking for the gradient profile for the Crianlarich-Lochearnhead section.

    You should have asked last week - it was the Scottish Model Railway Exhibition in Glasgow over the weekend - if none of the trade stands could help - I'll bet the society stands could.

    You'll just have to improve your timing! - sorry.

    The gradient profile for the Crianlarich to Dunblane section of the Callander and Oban Railway is in the Ian Allan book
    'British Rail Main Line Gradient Profiles', ISBN 0 7110 0875 2. Your local library should be able to locate a copy for you.

    According to my rail atlas Lochearnhead was on the Balquhidder Junction to Crieff line which is not covered in the book.

    I did mean Balquhidder station which was called Lochearnhead for a time. Thanks for that info, I'll see if I can get my hands on it.

    Yes I am an active volunteer
    Crianlarich to Luib is undulating with short stretches of ever changing gradients. After Luib there is around 5.5 miles of 1 in 69/1 in 70 with slight changes of gradient at Killin Jct. and at the summit. After the summit it descends at 1 in 60 all the way to Balquhidder.

    Oh for a magic wand to re-open Dunblane to Crianlarich! Attached is a photo of Killin Jct in 2007, and bridge 123 just east of the station on the Callander line with the Killin line below. Did anyone ever photograph Caledonian Single 123 going over bridge 123, nice thought?

    It would be one of the ultimate heritage railways wouldn't it? The views especially alongside Loch Dochart and in Glen Ogle are breathtaking... imagine a service from Crianlarich to Killin Junction, at which point people can get off, grab their bikes and do the circuit to Killin, down towards Lochearnhead and back. Going in the other direction from Crianlarich they could feasibly run a Summer Sundays service to Oban. Of course it'll never happen but of all the lost railways out there that stretch is relatively unscathed by modern development and road links to Crianlarich are superb. I think I've found the perfect cause for when I become a millionaire...
