Ah - but he was - having two weeks of the best that Britain can offer, which as usual involves going north of the border - just as we did back in 1973

I know a ship that could be chartered and has been at both Kyle and Mallaig this week too

    Re: The Great Britain V - 2012?

Here's an idea for the Bristol - Cornwall day. Bristol - Penzance and back in one day is a bit too much for a steam-hauled train but Bristol - Par and back has been done a few times. So how about this?

    Bristol - Par: 6023
    Par - Bristol: 6024
With perhaps Pitchford Hall providing assistance from/to Exeter or Newton Abbott if the load is more than 6024 can manage on Hemerdon. I think the limit is 8 coaches for a King, isn't it?

Take the opportunity to line up all three locos at St Blazey while they're down there. Although 3 locos seems a bit extravagant, other multi-day tours have used 3 in one day before.

The Provisional dates and locations are now on Uksteam info, and read in Steam Railway that 4472 has been requested from the NRM to go to Edinburgh!

Just remember those dates and locations etc are provisional, and are inevitably going to be subject to changes over the next 10+ months.

    Re: The Great Britain V - 2012?

Absolutely! And then there is the Steam Dreams Explorer 2 probably around May 18-24 with the hope of Tangmere north of the border and 4472 on the ECML - again all provisional

Took me a while to find the thread...

First change (of many) is 5029 will now be hauling 6023s section from Bristol to Paddington via Gloucester, according to the 5029 website. At least its still a GWR loco!

and it would appear that the 'optional' Stranraer trip is oversubscribed even though GB V itself isn't!

    Re: The Great Britain V - 2012?

I'm hoping that 46115 won't have any issues next season. 2011 was mean 2 her in the second half. No issues next year would be nice. The Scot will remain a question mark for me I'm afraid.

It would be neat if 48151 could do the Segment up to Kyle of Localsh.

    6023 won't make it.
    Will 34046 make it?
Will 4472 make it? Has anyone heard what the replacement might be in case for this one? Bittern hasn't made it north of York as far as I know.

I can see Ollie, Nunney or Tangmere doing the leg that is designated for LMS 6100. I don't think that RYTC will want another locomotive on the tour, but I can be wrong.

    4464(Bittern), 61994, 34067, 5029, 5305, 70013 are currently all systems go.

The full tour has already been confirmed in writing as a viable runner by RTC 5 months before it runs, that means it must be well on the way to being full

60019 went to Edinburgh last year and set fire to some of the ECML on both legs of her trip if I recall. 45407 worked a special to Ayr and back in conjunction with 60019's train.

    Re: The Great Britain V - 2012?

Steve Davies (head of the NRM) is quoted in the latest Steam Beano (iss. 397 arrived today) as saying that Flying Scotsman is "unlikely" to be ready in time to take part in GB5. Can't say I'm surprised.

My guess is that 70013 will deputise on the York - Edinburgh leg on Sat 21st, since she is working Kings Cross-Goole-Scarborough-Doncaster the previous Saturday (April 14th) and then the Glasgow-Ayr leg of GB5 on Wed 25th.

    We will see... :)

    Re: The Great Britain V - 2012?

So out of the 10 steam locos advertised to work the tour, only 6 are currently passed for the mainline. 6100 and 6023 have no chance of making it, 4472 is unlikely, and 34046 is still being kitted out at Bury. Still, 3 months to go for it to all change again!

    Re: The Great Britain V - 2012?

I'm also not surprised about 6100 needing to be replaced for the Preston-Bristol segment. Hopefully something big and red might be able to replace it. I also would not be surprised if Nunney Castle pulls that segment as it did last year.

    Re: The Great Britain V - 2012?

The overriding criteria should be that any replacement locomotive needs to be one that is within guage to run from Preston via Chester and Gresford Bank to Shrewsbury as that is the route the tour is advertised to run, as it was last year. When the Scot was replaced last year, the train was re-routed via Crewe because of guaging problems for substitute locos in the Gobowen area and hopefully the same does not happen this year. Black 5's , 34067, 46115, 70000 & 70013 are about the only engines that will currently fit and three of these are planned to be in use on other parts of the tour. Mr Riley ?
