I got wondering, had no 76XXX standard 4MT locos been preserved, there's probably a fair chance one of the 15 extant 80XXX standard 4MT locos would be in line for a conversion, by removing the tanks and bogie, building a tender and cutting off the bunker and frame plates beneath. Mechanically, would the two classes be near enough mechanically identical, for the purists sake, once you had done this?
Being standard, am i right to assume the boiler is the same design?
What about the wheels though? Although with this conversion process, you would end up with a similar looking mogul engine, how big is the difference in the wheel sets used? And if so, what work would need doing to the frames of the converted 80XXX to accomodate smaller wheel sets?

Does anybody know the current whereabouts and status of 44901? What say we get hold of her and make her into one of these brutes!

The answer to your first question would be to build a new loco, but re-use the pony truck and coupled wheel axle boxes. Sorry to be so negative.
    44901 is still at Barry.

Didn't the 76xxx have a different type of boiler?

According to Wiki (yes i know!) it was the 75xxx standard that was the tender version of the tank, not the Mogul.

Quoted from the 4-6-0's WIki page:

'They were essentially a tender version of the standard 4 2-6-4T, with similar characteristics to the GWR Manor Class, though unlike the Manors they were built to the universal loading gauge. They used the same running gear as the tank engine (with the leading bogie from the Standard Class 5), and substantially the same firebox, smokebox and boiler, although the boiler barrel was increased in length by 9 inches '

To me the boiler of the Mogul always looked smaller to the one carried by the other two 4MT types?

I think the idea falls because Riddles never really quite grasped the concept of standardisation - at least across classes...

Although to be fair on Riddles; 2 of the 3 classes quotes were basically updates of the equivalent LMS Ivatt / Fairburn classes, only the 4mt 4-6-0 was a new design, which should maybe have made use of more standard components ... or not been built at all ...
