Absolutely brilliant cjh30003,can not wait until the OAPway gang get their teeth into getting up and runing. It would be interesting to take the photos at the same positions on the way to Endon when that section is reopened later this year.

Thanks for the excellent tour of the line.

That embankment near Abbey Hulton looks like a serious challenge with the slipping. Will you be able to move the line over to the west, or do you have to stabilise all that slip before you can open?

In regard the reopening of the Cheadle branch there is an interesting artical in this weeks Railway Herald.

Speculation that the MCR is involved with a scheme to reopen the branch line to Cheadle is wide of the mark. The branch is owned by BRB (Residual) and has asked MCR to evaluate what would be required to reopen the branch and nothing more. It is understood that it is more of a case of trying to establish a use for the land and the reopening of the railway to Cheadle is obviously a consideration, but no more than that.

That makes more sense than all the 'rumours' that have been flying around. It always looked a bit of a 'no-goer' to me.

Well done - verygood indeed! and illustrative of some of the more serious obstacles, but also of the overall fair condition of the basic permanent way. It is interesting how - for a largely urban alignment - much of it is actually quite open in character.

One can only hope that the aggregate flows and Alton Towers potential come to fruition to validate the business case underlying this scheme

Shame Mr Knopfler's sound balance isn't so good live - brilliant studio sound and craftsmanship!

Who's forum is that? I'm a volunteer at CVR and didn't realise there was a forum for the line!

    Great pics btw.

Wow was that some hot weather yesterday. 8 members of the gang turned up yesterday enabling us to split into 2 4 men groups. We did the linewalk from Cauldon to Apesdale 4.5 miles, as we had enough people we took the Abtus data logging trolley with us. This records the cant and width of track for downloading into a computer and the results are the acted upon by the gang. This is what the second gang were doing on the CVR line, which was done a couple of weeks before. The linewalk went ok, a few keys knocked in some fishplate bolts tightened, nothing drastic. I think we were all drained by the end of the walk with the heat and my feet were like 2 pork chops being grilled. A soak in the bath. a couple of pints and a relaxing night soon put me right.

Finished the line walk from Apesford to Leek Brook today. The overcast clouds made conditions a lot better than last week, same sort of routine things to put right, keys and fishplate bolts to be tightened. It also seems that the farmers crossings see more use than the CVR ones as the flange clearances between the rail and timbers seem to fill up quicker. We got to Leek Brook about 2-30 and thought we would continue down the line to Wall Grange checking the track. Then came the downpour and it looked set for the rest of the day, so once again we were thwarted on going down the Stoke line. Ah well, I'm sure we will make it down there but my feet are itching to get started, well I think thats why they were itching but it could be they were just soaking.

That's good. While it may seem we are 'flying', the real test will come when they do the Abbey Hulton - Stoke stretch. Can't see that being done as swiftly as the first section.
