6023 mid Norfolk running

Would be a shame if KE2 to lose it's single chimney so quickly. Maybe it time to invest in the Lempor exhaust system and make it in to a single chimney 'Super-King'.

Considering that the restoration of 6023 has always been promoted as restoring at King to single chimney form, it would be bizarre to convert it to double chimney condition again. Sounds like the King might need some fettling to get it set up exactly right, and crews might need training in handling. Incorrectly set up, or incorrectly handled, any locomotive can use far more water and coal than it should.

After a few weeks trundling up and down a branch line, it's hardly time to invest in a Lempor exhaust system. The answer must be with handling, type of use and possibly (but unlikely) valve settings. The original post seemed to be sensationalising the issue, lets not let it get out of proportion. So the King is hungry at the moment, this can be sorted. There is no need to rush out and turn it into an identical double-chimneyed machine to KE1

 

I had a very enjoyable run behind KE2 on Wednesday last, I wouldn't say she was worked especially hard although acceleration was impressively rapid, but there was certainly no 'trundling'. All class 8 locos have big fireboxes, the King's although narrow is about ten feet long so a lot of fuel is being burnt all the time.

The whole purpose of the exercise is to iron out faults prior to mainline running and if you drive her too lightly they may not show up, a couple of problems have already been remedied. One thing that surprised me was the 'fore and aft' motion on start up, not as bad as some GWR two cylinder locos though.

Talking to the staff I learned that she was certainly bringing people in so that helps with the coal bill.

Ha! Ha! Ha! Yes, I was wondering about that. The original poster on this thread has only just the one post to his name so far. It makes me wonder if he'd seen the 6023 website, read that the loco's coal consumption on the Mid-Norfolk Railway has been high and decided to give out a plea to anyone with a King double chimney as a flower pot on their patio.
