I think it would be better if you did not make such remarks unless a) a member of the footplate crew told you the fireman could have been better or b) you are a mainline fireman yourself.

A lot depends on how experienced the Fireman is on the type of loco as well as experience in general, Dean Morris on the outward leg regularly fires Castles & Halls working out of Tyseley so it would be difficult for anyone to match him when he probably fires Castles more regularly than virtually anyone.

Perhaps No7 is not criticising the Fireman on the return leg, but saying the Churchill/Morris combination on Swindon machines is an excellent one.

Anyway, glad to read Nunney had a good day out and got back to Bristol safe and sound.

Excellent coverage Mark. 5029 is certainly a slogger and very determined. There is nothing the crew can do in a situation like that but let her get on with the job. It reminds me of the time 60800 tackled the South Devon banks. She was right on the limit and slogged up Hemerdon bank. I think the run is featured on one of the PSOV ML DVD's.

Nice sound. I had considered booking on this but it would have been a twenty two hours long day and that's not a good recipe for the long drive home.

    Spot on.

Churchill/ Morris were the crew on last years Southern Irishman with 5029( Which was a very good trip). Dean Morris was firing on the return( not sure if on the wayout) of the first Weymouth Seaside Special last year.

Video from the climb of Rattery now up at:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t37wZsZIOMM

Starts east of Totnes with us gathering pace only to get a single yellow in Totnes station and then basically coming to a halt at Sig E100. 19 minute vid.

I don't film these shots in HD as it takes so long for them to upload......

    Cheers,
    Mark

Cromwell and the other so called "celebrity" locos just don't do it for me. Besides, what can beat the sound of a single chimney Castle? The Brit just doesn't compare!

Also don't forget the Castle's were designed 27 years before the Brit's, and Swindon built 171 Castle's compared to 55Brit's built at Crewe. Maybe the Castle is the "proper" class 7? ;-)

Give me a plain ol' Castle any day!

5029 seems to lose speed until around 15mph (ish) on steep banks and then plod along at her own pace. She did the same last year going up Evershot.

Great video Mark! I'm glad you enjoyed the trip! It seems you share the same view as me: forget about breaking records, lets just get on with the job and make a lot of noise on the way!

I'm sorry my ugly mug got in your video! I was at the support coach window. Next time I'll say hi!

    Thanks Ben,no worries!

I thought it was you but as I spent most of my time hiding from a bombardment of coal (and mortar from the bridge!) I couldn't really tell!

5029 always been one of my fav engines (definetly GWR fav anyway) since I was knee high! Never forget some of the runs we have had on it......Tytherington a few years back been one of em! Shame I lost my 8mm-PC converter otherwise id have put a few more vids up,got plenty to go on!

Of course the double-headers with 5051 to PZ nearly 10 years ago were great (christ time flies!) hopefully be repeated some day!

Looking forward to some more Evershot thrash now.............

    Cheers,
    Mark
