I notice that two tours are booked over the Settle and Carlise this coming Thursday (19th May)

The Cathedral's Express is due through Settle Junction at 12:33 with the Cumbrian mountain Express half an hour behind at 13:07.

While I know the line reasonably well, I am stuggling to find a good location to photograph both trains, considering the likely angle of the sun (if there is any!)

My current thoughts are Selside or Waitby (but that's down grade) to get a side on angle but would appreciate any advice for a shot that time of day of a north bound train (or two)

    Many thanks

    Stuart

I would offer either Garsdale; Lunds or anywhere on the road between the Moorcock Inn and Ais Gill depending on your choice of composition; these locations will also be where the locos will be climbing up to Ais Gill.

Sun is not good for north bound S&C at this time of day, especially as the clock is forward one hour now. Try hiking up to the bridge after the signal box box at Blea Moor and shoot from the East side, the line effectively runs NE at this point. The same again, the exit from Blea Moor tunnel, walk the short distance up the rise from the little car park, very good shot if you've never done it. Good hunting.

My only northbound shot on the S&C was 5690 over Ribblehead Viaduct last August. It was very much backlit but I was pleased with the result - different time of year though so I'm not sure what that location would be like for this weekend. Almost worth it just for the spectacle though - especially because in some places the sound carries for a considerable distance. Conceivably you could have the sound of the first train fading not long before you start hearing the sound of the following train!

Looks like only 71000 now, 46115 postponed until August according to UK Steam.

Yes - just notice the cancellation - shame 2 tours in under an hour would have been great
