    BR had 3 of these locos I know that 2 were at the S&D where was the third one located?. The third one was a 2 speed loco was this an improvement? I heard that there was the original named Joyce that was saved for preservation by John Lees. Does anyone know if it has been restored yet or where it is.

    47190 and 47191 were the ex S&D locos. What was the number of the third one?

    The other ex LMS sentinels were 47180, 47181, 47182, 47183, which were the same, and 47184. 47180-83 were similar, if not the same as the ex LNER sentinels. I am not sure about 47184.

    Thanks for that in my 1956 Ian Allan there were only 3 listed and I assumed that was all that were built for the LMS.

    'Joyce', Sentinel Works No. 7109 is a 200 hp type (similar to the S & D pair), was new to Croydon Gas Works and is currently undergoing renovation at Midsomer Norton on the S & D..

    BR inherited a total of 7 Sentinels from the LMS, the ex S & D pair (47190/1), the Clee Hill quarry based single geared BE Industrial type, and four double geared CE main line railway types.

    Not to be overlooked are the 23 ex LNER Y1 single geared CEs, 31 Y3 double geared CEs, and the 2 Wisbech & Upwell Y10 200 hp tram locos.

    The GWR had two CE type delivered in 1926, Works No. 6515 was on trial for a few months before being returned to Sentinel. This one survives and will be in operation at the Quainton Rly Centre, Bucks., on May 1st & 2nd. The second one was scrapped in 1946 pre BR.

    Hows the restoration going on with Joyce,is it anywhere near to completion or is there a rough date for running.

    Met the owners a couple of weeks ago. Both engines freed off and run on air, chassis, cab, bonnet, etc painted. Boiler been worked on and re-assembled but yet to be installed.

    6515 at Quainton is the same mechanically as an LNER Y1/2 and is single speed as is the Middleton one. On the 2-speed ones the engine is mounted on a gearbox with a lower gear for shunting, and a higher ratio (faster) for light travelling between yards on 'pick-up' work, but can't haul much in this gear. With the fixed single gearing on 6515 we have a recommended top speed of 20 mph, yet can still get wheelslip. Seems to be a good compromise for its current use.

    Is Joyce being restored as built, or will it have the reduced cab as the S+D locos.

    Keeping original cab as far as I am aware. There are other differences, the cab window shape and the profile of the cab back at least.

    I was up at Ironbridge Gorge a couple of weeks back and in the Enginuity muesum grounds under the viaduct they had two Sentinel 0-4-0s. One was complete and one was stripped but both were wrecks. Anyone know the history of these engines and what is their future (if anything)?

    are these potentially useful for heritage railway operations or are they not really powerful enough and more of an pet project affordable by an individual?

    They are powerful and efficient for their designed purpose - shunting and short factory/yard trips. But probably too slow for longer journeys at line speed, or a tight timetable. Embsay's website says their Sentinel is useful for carriage heating since steam raising is very fast.
