A lot of people undoubtedly share your sadness at the situation with 3814, both on and off the NYMR. I do know the situation behind the lack of progress with the loco but I'm not going to go public with it. Suffice is to say that it has nothing to do with the NYMR, who I'm sure would love to see it running.

I certainly prefer the designs of Sir William, Sir Nigel, Sir Vincent, anything Southern, anything Standard or perhaps even an S160, but Swindon products are vastly preferable to Sulzer products, and I spent far too much time on those things last year!!

Steve's summed it up. The NYMR is not likely to turn down a loco that would be highly effective.

The problem being of course money. I'd buy her, but any offer my bank manager would let me make would probably buy about two rivets.

If there are not enought interested people to get together to save her, then it comes down to an individual who can afford to buy and restore her, and what alternative vould an individual get for the money?

If its a Bullied 'Namer' - (and I'm guessing that the costs re running a WC/BB or a 28xx are not that drastically different) then I'm just thinking that for most people the Bullied would win, and that for the others they already have their loco.

There is an awful lot of Bullieds about though that are just a kit of parts with out any chance of being repaired in the near future. It doesn't bode very well for 2859....

People will have to drop their prices if they really want to sell. From the buyers point of view there is no point spending all your funds on the purchase price if you then can't afford to restore it.

Yes 3803 has been for sale at £350k for a long time - ultimately it's only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it, and as the length of boiler ticker remaining diminishes, that value depreciates. It would appear that no-one is prepared to pay £350k for it and the owners ought to be looking for some lesser figure if they are serious about selling it.

If groups are unable to find funds to restore ex Barry loco’s and are considering selling their loco. Maybe they should consider selling their loco’s to other groups at the scrap metal price and not at over inflated price? This way other groups could afford to buy and restore unwanted locos from other groups.

I would be very suprised if scrap metal prices don;t start to come in on the lower end of the steam market. Looking at it realisitically, whatever was paid in the "glory days" of the 2000s isn;t realistically ever going to be see again.

The west as a whole is stuck in a general economic decline that we (the public) will have to bear the brunt of throughout our spending patterns, as a result, steam takes second place to home/food. If people want to sell loco shaped scrap and partly restored locos they need to realise what is genuinely realistic, preferably for the greater good of the locos.

In an idealistic manner we'd give away locos to whoever was guaranteed to look after them the best, however these days I think reality needs to hit home in a different way. If locos aren't sold to someone who can look after them/put them undercover when they can't be supported by groups/railways/indiviuals they will detiorate to an irreparable state.

As for the 2859 and all the other unrestored locos out there, I do hope that we get to see the steaming one day in the distant future!

If groups are unable to sell their unwanted loco and new groups are unable to afford the prices of ex Barry locos. Why don't the owning groups lease these locos under a 99 years lease at a nominal fee? This could give un restore loco a fighting chance of being returned to steam again. Which is everyone’s main goal to aim for?

You'd think so. But as with most things in life, where people are involved there is potential for 'politics'.

Not sure it quite works like that though. Yes, globally rail enthusiasts want to see everything possible preserved, but in the context of a particular group, there may be other factors at play. In this case the group has two locos - one more advanced in terms of restoration than the other. It would appear that on that basis the 2nd loco has been put up for sale - possibly because it isn't realistically envisaged to get through both with the group members as they age (in which case if this is the only driver then it may be that passing it on to another realistic restorer could be an option). However its more likely that its necessary to try and release funds via this sale in order to try to complete the other loco. That hypothetical situation makes the choices harder - given a choice between keeping both as potential restoration candidates (although neither unique in preservation) but neither likely to be completed, or completing one and selling parts from the other to fund that whilst also simultaneously helping keep other locos running - its not totally clear cut which is the better choice. In theory whilst they both exist there is always the potential to restore both - but is two potential better than one almost certain?

The other issue is even if this were offered as a give away, are there groups with a site, tools and workforce capable of doing anything with it. From what I can tell most established lines have more locos in their pending tray than they can already deal with, whilst other lines that might like a mainline loco, probably don't have the ability to turn this around or the resources to divert to something that won't steam for ten years+.

Regrettably I see where you are coming from and it’s only a waiting game until ex Barry un restored locos will be broken up and sold on for spares. I remember reading about locos escaping Barry yard and moving to new home and hear and reading all the excitement that went with another loco leaving Barry. With so many locos being saved from Barry yard was this always going to be the case that not all escapes would be steamed again. It now looks like reality is now starting to hit home for the railway preservationist?

Just a thought and i admit it wasnt my idea

As 5532 needs her boiler doing ( the last big expense) couldn't the possibility be looked at where somone does the boiler for the price of aquiring 2859 or is that faraaaar to out of the box thinking

Spoke with the owners down at Llan in around June. They said the loco is up for sale still but no real interest. They need around £150,000 to finish 5532 which is their main priority. Anyone want to buy her? £25,000 i think was what they are asking. But that was in june so if anyone is interested you should contact the group direct.

£25k for 2859 looks cheap compared to the £100k they want for 35009

No tender for starters; they flogged that off without consulting the shareholders.

If £25k is correct, and not a typo, then surely if the loco has a half decent firebox it would be attractive to an existing 28xx operator as a spare that could be overhauled ready to drop in at an overhaul.
