I remember the first time it came into Leeds Central and took the platform edge off, slight gauging problem!

    I was going to suggest 2 x 33 and 10 mark 1's Brighton - Exeter and return.
The trouble is getting a path along the coast from Brighton and West of Exeter.
As a back-up plan Portsmouth Harbour to Cardiff C then Cardiff C to Crewe via Shrewsbury.

Whatever, it won't recreate the 1638 from Waterloo in the 1980's with most of the front coach full of enthusiasts.

    Cheers, Neil

Would you like to tell us your local station, or should we try them one by one and hope we get lucky?

Maybe I should narrow down the parameters......the tour has to use my choc/cream stock and most likely start from one of the Birmingham stations, with pickups along the route.

Thinking about top/tail with two different types. I would like to use a Western one way........

Given the amount of interest in 86259, how about 4965/5043 TYS to Crewe 86259 Crewe to Carlisle and return to Crewe and then 47773 to haul the tour back to TYS?
Yes Ben I should know better, but I'm sure a bit of blue sky thinking doesn't go amiss.:)
And you get to satisfy all three parts of the enthusiast community in one fell swoop, plus a decent destination for the 'tourists'

I think it was RSG that went over Copy Pit a few years ago, I was on it from Sheffield, it kicked off from Derby IIRC. Again IIRC it was Peter Kirk driving and on the return journey it ran out of fuel somewhere around Chesterfield.
Edit:- there you go Ben, get on to Martin Walker and book the mighty machine. Birmingham start, come up, go round the Tin Bath, and return. Offer Mr.Andrew lots of money to come out of retirement to drive it.

Ho! Ho! Ho! The wickedness in my steam driven soul couldn't resist it. Okay, fair enough. Rather than Woodhams, let's opt for a one way trip from Paddington to Newport behind Western Champion followed by a short run down to Cashmore's!! Passengers will return by HST or maybe 5043 could be provided! lol

I know I shouldn't blow the steam trumpet all of the time, but you only had to witness the amazing reaction of a packed platform 3 at London Victoria awaiting a delayed Ramsgate service yesterday, when the doubled headed Cathedrals Express pulled into Platform 2 behind Clan Line and 44932. I have never seen so many average members of public reaching for their mobiles and iPhones to capture the moment. Magical.

It is the only form of transport in the world that would generate that kind of reaction and that is why so many people love steam. Wouldn't have happened if it was a diesel, even a Deltic.

Not to say there is anything wrong getting enthusiastic about diesels. There is room for everyone in this hobby. But I was bought up in an age where diesels started replacing steam. I will never forgive them for that!

    Merry Christmas

    Nick

We would love to use "Les Ross" 86259 a lot more but it hasn't really found a following who will pay to ride behind it. When I do this tour we will definitely include "Les" on a leg. New Street to Crewe is it's stomping ground, so......

Any objections to the name "Modern Traction? Tour" yes-including the question mark. When was the last time you saw a headboard with a question mark! Lol

How about 50's Crewe to Glasgow via WCML? Videoed a pair of 50's at Scout Green heading north on a tour in the 80's, think they were heading for Glasgow but can't recall where they started from. 50008 & 50009 rings a bell.

Done a bit of searching and found the video. 14/5/1988 The Hoover Dambuster with 50009 and 50036 from Birmingham New Street to Glasgow Central. Returned via S&C. Details from Six Bells Junction because meningitis at Fourty odd does nothing for the memory. Will put the video on You Tube at some point.

    Ben,
If you want to use 86259 Brum-Crewe then the obvious choices considering your TOC would probably be:
    1)DRS 20s Crew-Ludo/Blaneau
2)WCRC 33s/40/50s/55 Crewe-Carlisle(but would prefer anywhere BUT Carlisle).33s probably your best bet as seen no mainline use this year apart from York-Whitby.
