If we were going to put on a mainline Diesel hauled tour, what equipment would you like to see?

    From where to where?

And let's try and be realistic! Lol

Royal Scots Grey doing a Tin Bath Extra.

I'll now go any lie down in a darkened room for even thinking about a diesel tour.....

A pair of class 20's to Ludo, recreating the summer trains of the early 90s. Something like Sheffield-Derby-Crewe-Chester-Llandudno (break for normals), then an out and back to Blaenau Ffestiniog for the enthusiasts, should be manageable without the need for massively early starts or too long a day.

Just a Tin Bath Extra would do, as we seem to be short changed of trips through the Calder Valley of late

I'm not sure if there are a couple of mainline 20s available. I will dig around.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

I know you said Diesel Ben but what about giving 86259 another leg stretch ?, Norwich via the WCML, North London Line & Great Eastern seems like a decent run and destination in my mind.

New St - Edinburgh behind a Deltic would get me interested also, or Swanage behind Western Champion.

Edit: Expanding on Edinburgh, is this feasible ?:

    New St - York - 55022
    York - Edinburgh - 60019
    Edinburgh - New St - 55022

Western Champion Snow Hill to Plymouth. 55022 Birmingham to Kings X if it's possible to access the ECML around Newark or Grantham.
Any space in your darkened room Ralph? :)

A tour from my local station to a heritage railway somewhere using anything except a Class 47 and running on a Saturday or Sunday when there are no interesting steam tours or galas happening.

The reason I have a place for a Deltic was from the impression created when I heard and saw my first, the blue prototype looming out of the fog running into Crewe at about 10.20pm one January Friday night in 1958. The train was the Royal Highlander 7.20pm from Euston with 16 on including kitchen and dining cars, so quite a load, the sight and sound of this humming apparition coming out of the fog was something that I remember well. Very often previously it would be hauled by a Jub and a 5, both of which came off at Crewe where a Duchess took over for the rest of the journey to Inverness. 3 hours from Euston with I think 4/5 stops was not bad going in those days, and certainly with steam on the crews earned their pay.

A Deltic without doubt, but on an 8 coach train running on a pre HST non-stop schedule from KX to somewhere up North and back.

At the moment GBRF are operating four 20s on LT unit drags in the Midlands and DRS have the odd one or two still on flask traffic.

Although not a big fan of 20s I can see the appeal of a traditional trip from the Midlands to North Wales. Just a shame one of the RTC 47/9s isn't available to help out as in the 90s...

For me a day out to Anglia with Essex would appeal. How about Brum to Lowestoft via Peterborough and Wensum Curve and return via the East Suffolk and the GE and Midland mainlines. This would allow pick ups and drop offs from Brum to Melton Mowbray (Coleshill Pway, Nuneaton, Leicester among others). Obviously would need to find some attractions for the non-enthusiast in Lowestoft but there is the beach, the Broads, East Anglian Transport Museum or perhaps the annual airshow? Just a thought...
