I'm tempted to order the DVD, but that dreadful music on the preview clip puts me off.

The Castle + King double header provides a valuable lesson on how not to take good railway photographs. You can hear someone standing near the video camera clicking his shutter 5 or 6 times before the train is close enough to get a decent picture. All straight to the dustbin I fear.

Yes,unfortunately the shutter sound cannot be avoided when you stand close to someone with a SLR camera, the only way to eradicate it completely is to stand somewhere obscure where noone else is. I have achieved this in many of the shots but it isn't always possible.

One thing i would like to reiterate is that you shouldn't expect the quality of PSOV in all the shots, there are a few included that wouldn't make it into some DVD's,however in this one it is the spectacle of the loco that we are portraying as much as anything.

I have noted down the music comment and will not use similar music in the future.

The sound of premature shutter clicking is one of the curses of the digital age. It has blighted my own videos more than once. The culprits are lazy photographers who cannot or will not learn to shoot at the right moment and not before or after.

Couldn't agree more, occasionaly I just take one shot in case me or camera pack up as it gets closer but I 9 times out of 10 ensure that I am ready with a composed shot before it appears!

One other than annoys me more than the odd click is those who take about 30 shots,as if they are firing a 50 Cal. Machine Gun,I manage perfectly fine just taking 3 or 4,so why someone has to use their entire memory card in one go to get "that" shot I don't know. No skill to it in my mind but I know many others will argue that.

Regrettably the music is intrusive as is the constant crashing of the SLRs. I wonder if, as the videographer isn't panning, he is himself the culprit. I have found that the only solution to the SLR problem is to stand well away from the 'galleries' and to be, to my great regret, insufferably rude to stills photographers if they approach. They disappear and look for somebody who's more friendly; I get the footage I want, but it can also be a bit lonely!

I don't understand why stills photographers stick to the obsolete technology of the SLR mirror. It is possible nowadays to do away with the direct optical viewfinder and as you are, do away with the shake, rattle and roll of the mirror. The concept of the interchangeable lens could remain, it does produce lenses that have brilliant results. I once put this view forward to a Canon salesman at an Olympia show. The poor man nearly died of apoplexy!

Sorry to be negative, but I don't think that it is possible to produce good films until the videographer learns to pan and zoom effectively and the music that units us all is the sound of the steam engine.

When we're filming we have our microphone on extension leads which allow us to adjust how far away from the "crowd" the sound is taken plus we also have it on the ground for both extra wind reduction and to give us that extra distance from the "crowd".

There will always be situations where it will be impossible to get away from the photographers but I’ve always found this to be a good solution and to date it's worked. For example on our Autumn DVD trailer there is a clip of 92214 on a freight charter at Goathland for that particular shot we were surrounded by at least 10 people most of whom were taking photos but nothing was picked up on our sound clip.

Good to see you branching out with your filming Mark and I wish you every possible success with your DVD.

    Thanks for the advice guys.

@Orion,regrettbly in some cases (not the 5029/6024 one) the click of my camera can be heard, but never more than 1-4 times,as I know how much it ruins shots when someone fires 5-10 times,it doesn't even take a galllery to spoil the shot.

@Simon,when I bought my HD video camera I didn't actually notice that it did not come with a mic slot, otherwise I wouldn't have bought it,fortunately it does cope rather well without one but a camera with a mic slot is something I am looking towards getting. Certainly its very high on my list as is getting a new camera to go with my current piece of kit.

Unfortunately since I was made redundant in August I haven't had the money to go buying camera kit like I was previously, and the fact that I need some form of income (however big or small) is one of the reasons I decided to allow people the opportunity to buy our footage.

I have plenty of ideas for new DVD's and we have plenty of footage stretching back to 1991 and beyond,so as you might of guessed there is a hell of a lot of footage to go at!! (Over 100,000 hours)

Anyway, keep your eyes peeled for a few more "exclusive/interesting" releases that will soon be available........

    Many thanks,
    Mark
