Im not of an age to have seen any of these handsome tanks, but my father being on the footplate did, but he tells me that they were not that good and most drivers prefered the class 2 ivatt's?
A great shame I feel that there are none left as they looked cracking.
    New Build anyone?
I think I would if a lottery win come my way.:peep:

I have always thought them to be a fine looking loco as well. Perhaps they were another one of those designs that with a few minor tweaks might have delivered what they promised ? I know some were modified in the end, but don't remember the outcome. Its another one of those loco's that would do a pretty good job on most heritage lines had a few been preserved.

I have to agree, for me the best looking tank locos ever built. I keep hoping I'll find decent quality drawings of them so I can build them for Trainz but no look so far. Fingers crossed the LMS Locomotive Profiles series covers them soon.

I had heard the same, that the smaller class 2s were better machines

A retired driver tells me that they were poor steamers and really neede some mods to improve this, but as usual improvements were never made as those driving them could not possibly know better that the designers....

Modifications were tried including larger boilers but it made little difference. Same with modified front ends on the Fowler version.

Yes, I'm looking forward to the forthcoming 'LMS Profile' too, if only to see if it offers an explanation of why these engines - and their Fowler predecessors - didn't work but the Ivatts did. Always thought that a bit odd.

    Regards
