I've been contacted by a scrap man who has the task of cutting up a tank wagon, which he believes dates from 1937, currently located (I think) in Devon on a private site (in a quarry, I think). He thinks it is too good to cut but it has to be gone by the end of July, so time is tight.

As transport to the GCR, where I'm based, would be astronomical, plus we have no space (I haven't even asked, I just know...), I think the best I can do is offer the opportunity to others. Anyone interested?

He's looking to basically match the scrap value. I'm still awaiting photographs but will forward them to anyone interested when I have them.

Is it still available? If so about how much does he want for it? And do you have any pictures? Thanks

Still awaiting photos, I need to chase him. Drop me a PM with your email address.

I think he's looking for 'scrap value' but until I've seen a photo and can work out how big it is and thus approximately what it weighs, it's difficult to judge what 'scrap value' is.

I've now got the photos but for various tedious reasons am unable to post them here. I've sent copies to the two interested parties though - anyone else can PM me with their email address if interested.

It looks like a standard 4w tanker, welded tank, saddle mounted with wooden beams restraining the barrel at each end, and tie rods between those and the underframe. One of the ladders is missing (the one on the non-photographed side is still there, apparently) but it looks largely complete apart from that. And I think they were built without ladders anyway, so this might not matter.

From the number on the end which looks like 'A3982' (although the '8' isn't very clear), I believe it to be ex-Shell/BP.

Due for the chop soon so be quick...

    Cheers,
    Phil

One of the photos (in somewhat reduced form) is now on the Carriage Exchange website.

This wagon will be cut up at the end of next week if no takers. The scrap man wants £1700 for it which, given it weights about 9.5T, works out at £180/T. There's transport on top of that of course. Personally I can't afford it, but it would be nice to see it saved. Anyone...?

I really hope that this can be saved.

(I can't afford it either, nor do I have any where to put it!)

Haven't heard yet but as nobody was sufficiently interested to come up with the cash, I presume it's somewhere between about-to-be-cut and cut.

    Shame. But I did try.

    Confirmed, it's been cut.
