    Sad news indeed - not only a part of history but an example of the way that the true "men of fame" were simply those who "got on with the job" through thick and thin. For those of us who lived who lived through the changing years it seems hard to think how those times are now seen as "History" and men like Ernie made it! R.I.P.

    Both Peter Fitton and John Burnett are members of the Preston '0' Gauge group who have public meetings every last Saturday of the month. John is always there and is a great guy to talk to, he is alway ready to reminisce about his driving and firing days.

    Very sorry to hear that news. I was at Preston that night and travelled on the penultimate steam 20.50 to Blackpool. The rumour was that the Liverpool train would be diesel hauled which is why I chose the Blackpool train. Also a memorable trip. So sad that we are losing those men for whom steam was part of their everyday working life.
