Barry Scrapyard 6869 Resolven Grange?

Maybe someone can answer Terry Coldicott question in this months SR mag on page 128 (Mail bag). Terry has come across a photo that appears to be a photo of 6869 Resolven Grange which was taken in 1972. But all the Granges were cut up well before 1972. Can anyone remember seeing this loco with the wrong number on it? The photo shows very clearly 6869 on the cab side. Does anyone out there know the true identity of this loco?

 

Are you sure it's taken at Barry? Are you sure the date is 1972 and not earlier?

 

Are you sure it is not a picture of 6989 following the attention of a joker with a paint brush?

The photo does look like a Barry one - particularly with the presevation slogans painted on locos & tenders.

My first visit to Barry was in 1968 - on this and many numerous subsequent visits NO Granges were recorded.

 

I too suspect that it is 6989, and the lone Hawksworth tender in view is probably the one which was detached from 4983/4965 when Tyseley took it away with atender from one of the 28xx loco's.

 

A number of engines at Barry had different numbers on them than rightfully belonged there.

I'm surprised that no-one so far has mentioned the obvious visible difference which enables immediate distinction between a Hall and a Grange. If the picture in question is anywhere near clear, on a Grange class the running plate is raised where it passes over the cylinders. The Hall class had straight running plates.

 

It only shows the back 1/8, i.e. the cab, the area in question being way off the photo...

 

Pity about the wrong camera angle, though perhaps not surprising.' You can fool some of the people ................' . Woodhams didn't buy any Granges, that is known from the Western Region's sales records. And if the picture was indeed taken in 1972 it is virtually certain that the engine in question still exists, because very few were scrapped at Barry after that year and those that were broken up were well documented.

 

I think I can safely answer this one, apart from the fact we can be almost certain no Granges went to Barry, if you look at the cab steps in the picture they have a solid filled in backplate with a slogan painted on. If you look at a picture of a Grange they have a cut out backplate on the cab steps, ie there is a hole between each step.

Have not seen the photo myself so I may be barking up the wrong tree, but could someone be having a joke because (obviously) 6869 is 6989 upside down!

 

Does anyone know which scrapyard 6869 went too or was it cut up by BR?
