I have had a video of a Sentinel on youtube for several years now and yesterday I got an amusing comment,

Who tuned that fire box!? That poor truck has an over rich burn condition! ,and needs more air to the flame! or less oil to the burner, failling that have it re jetted!

I pointed out that it was coal fired and got this back,

They are running her on Coal!? Why have they not converted it to run off waist oil, with a babington burner?
That being coal smoke? Then They mite look in to a catalitic converter from a wood stove to fit it! You know, cut back the soot?

This guy is a 27 year old American who obviously has never heard of heritage and keeping things in as near original condition as possible. At the moment I am waiting for a suitable reply which is being composed by my brother who drives it most of the time.
Any other suitable comments to include are welcome..

Back in the halcyon days at 'Steamtown' I used to care for and run the sentinel rail shunter there. It was in 'Eastern Gas' livery then and named 'Gasbag' - and a few other things! We used to run her on decades worth of 'scrap coal' that was gathered from around the site. She could move a 'Black Five' no problem :) Love my sentinels - road or rail :)

Have you seen John Barracloughs ERF / Y9 cross!

    Magic piece of kit!

I first saw it at Renishaw many years ago - a group of lads armed with Stilsons off to the chip shop at about 40mph!

Chris Hutchinson made a very nice Super tractor from scratch built around a sentinel railway loco engine.

    Give me an S4 anyday.

While on the subject of Sentinal Steam lorries, the NYMR is proud to announce that it has become the livery sponsor of the Sentinal Steam Bus Elizabeth which operates in Whitby, a feloow "Moors and Coast" Tourism Award winner to the NYMR for last year.

Coverage in the latest NYMR TV episode (along with 45428 boiler and Bridge 30 lifts):

I've had further communications from this American guy who suggests that as we don't want to convert to oil, then it would be a good idea to instal a fan to improve the air flow and thus improve combustion...
I sent him this link and suggested he tell the owners of the Challenger that they need to adjust their firing techniques... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OgSNQOTw2U

Whatever happened to the Tom Varley collection of steam lorries from the 1970/80s, I seem to remember he even had a Yorkshire Patent steam wagon?

Tom Varleys collection was sold after Toms death howver his family still own a Fowler. Tom did indeed own severel Yorkshire Waggons along with other makes such as Aveling, Sentinel, Foden as well as severel traction engines including the rare Howard.

Thanks Jim, rumour has it that he once got done for speeding in a Yorkshire Patent steam waggon, anybody else heard that or is it just an urban myth?

Getting back on to what to say to the Yank. I suggest that he and a few others does a reverse Mayflower trip and go out in the world and discover that America is not the centre of everything and that other countries survive very will without their 'help' and input. In fact the world might be a much better place if more people visited and under stood other cultures before making uninformed opinions...

In America you visit their historical sites and they are younger than my grandmothers 2 up, 2 down built in 1888. So I always smile as yet another American tells me of their long and glorious history.

Tom fitted a gearbox from a Leyland truck to one of his Yorkshires and it did go like the preverbial.
My own waggon has been clocked by the police at 57mph (not in my ownership though).

Its not going fast bit thats difficult its stopping them!

Hmmm...... The problem with attempting any high speed with a Sentinel is that the water pumps cavitate, and the boiler water level just goes down. Am skeptical about these claimed speeds in the 60 mph region without bits falling off or the valves going out of adjustment.

How about proponents of such claims organising a run in each direction over a measured mile to prove the point, or otherwise?

I once managed to get 45 mph out of a DG4P, but that was on a slight downhill road. "S-types" perhaps a little more, but 60 mph I think not.

The Howard, is that the only example of it's kind and built in Bedford?

There are two Howards that survive, one came back from Australia with Tom Varley and the other came back from the Henry Ford Museum and is with Richard Vernon in Leicestershire. Both have been restored to steam, which is nice. Make a lovely change to Burrells, Marshalls and Fowlers.

I know of at least 3 s type owners that claim to have have reached 60mph. I have certainley travelled on BEV 467 on the A127 at a very high speed when ownership of Ian Berne, must admit the engine did not sound too happy though.

As regards to my own waggon 8827 I only listed ta claim that a previous owner told me and which I have no reason to beleive is not true, however 30- 35mph is our top speed.

I have been running traction engine and steam roller for a few years. You should point out to him that it has been like that for XX amount of year and that there are no plan to alter a peace of history. And that it also depend on the coal that is been burned weather or not the machine make lots of smoke. Some coal no matter what you do it just makes smoke even when you give it lots of top air.

Thanks Anthony. I'm sure it's the ex Henry Ford one I saw at Shuttleworth not long after repatriation. There was also a Foden steam lorry from the Ford collection too IIRC.
