This topic reminds me of those Victorian photographs of Ffestiniog Railway Locomotives with footplate crews who appear to be exactly the right height to stand comfortably in the cab doorways and look as though they are about 70 when (sadly) they were probably only middle aged by todays standards.

It is a vivid reminder of how much the understanding of nutrician and standards of living has changed since then.

Thanks for that - re-enforces what the Steam Railway article said (and what seemed to have happened in pictures of number 9 - I'd wondered about that for ages.....). It does look a lot better lowered down!!

I know this is really anorak-esque (!) question but did the BMR fit the original cab back on after overhaul (and add the 6" to it somehow) or was it a 'new build'? Ditto when it was lowered again.

Hi to asnwer the question, the cab and bunkers on No.9 wrer new in 1990 I would imagine it was 1992 when it was lowered again! The only part of the bodywork that was kept were the tanks! On No.8 even the tanks were renewed all fixtures and fittings were kept though and applied to the new platework!
    Cheers

Thanks for that. That's what I love about National Preservation - it doesn't matter how obscure your question, there's usually someone who knows the answer.....

Both No9 and No8 came from Brecon with new cabs 6" taller, and both were re built 3" lower back at the vor winter 1996, built taller to give more headroom but looked a bit silly. The original cabs were very low inside. facts Andy!.

Number 9 was going thro' Brecon's shop when I was working there. I seem to recall that the platework was new.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Ian
