BR converted a class 108 DMU with a auto gearbox (late 1980's- early 1990's), was it a success or failure? and what whas it like to drive? [IMG]

I can't comment on what it was like to drive but it was clearly a failure (either not very good or too expensive) because they didn't convert any more than the one set. At least one of the vehicles is preserved and undergoing major refurbishment at the Midland Railway Butterley and I know that the Autogear has been disabled and manual gearing reinstated (BR did this!).

EDIT: They are both preserved at the same place but one is a driving trailer and so only received the controls and nothing else.
