What is it that is so wrong with painting it BR green for a few months?

Although I currently remain unclear as to precisely who it was that provided the PRCLT with my own name and e-mail address, in the last day or so, I have received an e-mail from the society's Chairman, this effectively inviting me to contribute to such a totally unnecessary paint job and, I might also submit, one that will NOT be universally welcomed.

Indeed, personally speaking, black (and, presumably, the unlined version in which LMS engines ran for a year or so following WWII) is far from attractive - as well as being very un-photogenic. I feel sure that I will now be far from the only one who would much prefer to see 6233 remain in maroon livery, albeit not exactly in the condition that most of us ever remember them operating.

Furthermore, given that I was one of many who, last year, expressed a willingness to contribute towards the temporary repaint back into BR green - as proposed by a group of lineside photographers - for 46233's last months in service, only to have this rebuffed with a stone-walling plethora of excuses, presumably by the "It Must Remain in LMS Livery Brigade", I take this move to approach me now as constituting little more than an insult!

Despite the undoubtedly great news that a boiler extension has now been granted for, perhaps, another few months and despite the fact that monies to fund other than the contentious few dozen gallons of black gloss paint will undoubtedly be urgently desired all too shortly, I would nevertheless prefer to put my hard-earned money somewhere where I can feel assured that it will be put to far better use.

It, therefore, goes without saying that I shall not be making a donation in this instance.

now I may be very wrong but do we not need to consider whose hand is heavily involved with 6233 (and 6100 and 4472 previously)

Goodness gracious me. Nothing like a coat of paint to get some people all hot and bothered. So the hoped for transformation into BR green won't happen. Big deal, it's not the end of life as we know it. Maybe some meaningful discussions can be held while she's under overhaul and a further livery change brought about. One thing I do know is that spitting feathers won't get anyone anywhere.

Nice, but if she were in her current livery, I bet WCRC wouldn't mind painting those go-faster stripes along their maroon set for a year or so. Either blue or red would go with the VSOE Pullmans, of course.

As a Tyseley man, saltydog, perhaps you know or can find out if the streamlining is already fitted as if for high-speed running, or whether more work would be needed.

This thread has become most entertaining. Never mind the hundreds of thousands of pounds it takes to overhaul and maintain the locos, let's just get all uptight about the colour and throw our toys out of the pram if it isn't the "right" colour.

Now malachite green is a wonderful colour and best displayed on OVS's finest but I'm sure one of Sir William's beauties would wear it quite well. Would annoy one heck of a lot of people though. Where's me paintbrush? :D

Makes me laugh that people moan about an engines colour and campaign for change, when it is finally changed they still moan because it still wont be the right colour.

You don't need to repaint it to annoy lots of photographers - just leave it as it is and repeatedly state that it will never go green.

And we wonder why we get called trainspotters ;)

Won't paint it green simply due to blind prejudice, despite the pent up demand - even though you could get it done for free - that's a great way to run a business - plonkers!

Ring the changes and watch the shekels and the publicity roll in!

Don't like it black - why not?? It makes a change from seven years of LMS red - and is historicallyaccurate too!

Now what about early BR blue - Duchesses look great in model form in that livery - I'll bet 1:1 scale would too!

BR blue is a sadly neglected livery. Will be interesting to see what 6023 looks like in that colour scheme.

RED touch paper on a firework? How dare the manufactures of fireworks change our long established British tradition of BLUE touch paper on our fireworks? I bet this is all down to cheap imported fireworks from China! How dare they, you would think they invented the things!!!-------------oh, eh, well maybe I should quitely get my coat now.

Why not have the whole mainline 7P and 8P fleet switching between BR Blue, Brunswick Green, and Black over 3 years. It'd give 'em a kind of "preservation express" corporate identity.
I apologise to A&E doctors in the Tyseley area, who may be treating some cases of sudden apoplectic fits tomorrow. Perhaps GWR classes could be excused in return for more frequent visits to the North.
